# George Abramson

**George N. Abramson** (May 13, 1903 – March 15, 1985) was an American professional [football](/source/American_football) [guard](/source/Guard_(gridiron_football)) and [placekicker](/source/Placekicker) who played for the [Green Bay Packers](/source/Green_Bay_Packers) in the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL).[1] He played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [Minnesota Golden Gophers](/source/Minnesota_Golden_Gophers_football).

## Personal life

Abramson (known as George Abrahamson in his childhood) was born in [Eveleth, Minnesota](/source/Eveleth,_Minnesota), spent his childhood in Aurora, Minnesota, and graduated from Aurora High School in 1919. He moved to [Virginia, Minnesota](/source/Virginia,_Minnesota) with his family in 1920. After that he started a furniture business where he had 3 stores around Illinois and retired to the Bay Area in 1964.

Abramson was [Jewish](/source/Jewish) and was said to speak [Yiddish](/source/Yiddish) with a Jewish teammate on the field during games in college.[2] He was cousins with [Arthur Naftalin](/source/Arthur_Naftalin), the first Jewish mayor of [Minneapolis](/source/Minneapolis).[3]

After his football career, he moved to [Kewanee, Illinois](/source/Kewanee,_Illinois) and then to [California](/source/California). He died in 1985.

## College career

Abramson played for the [Minnesota Golden Gophers](/source/Minnesota_Golden_Gophers_football). During the [1922](/source/1922_Minnesota_Golden_Gophers_football_team) and [1923](/source/1923_Minnesota_Golden_Gophers_football_team) seasons, he was named as an honorable mention to the [Walter Camp](/source/Walter_Camp) [All-American](/source/College_Football_All-America_Team) team.[4] In 1924, he was named second-team All-American and first-team All-[Western Conference](/source/Big_Ten_Conference).

At Minnesota, Abramson was a member of the [Sigma Alpha Mu](/source/Sigma_Alpha_Mu) fraternity.[5]

## Professional career

Abramson played 10 games for the [Green Bay Packers](/source/Green_Bay_Packers), where he's recorded as having made two [field goals](/source/Field_goals) and two [extra points](/source/Conversion_(gridiron_football)). He attempted and made the first [fair catch kick](/source/Fair_catch_kick) in [NFL](/source/NFL) history.[6]
