# Geoffrey Rhoades

**Geoffrey Rhoades** (1898–1980) was a British [painter](/source/Painting) and art teacher.[1][2]

## Life

Rhoades was born in London, and was a student at Clapham Art School from 1915 to 1917. After a period in the [merchant navy](/source/Merchant_navy) he attended the [Slade School](/source/Slade_School) from 1919 to 1923 where he was taught by [Henry Tonks](/source/Henry_Tonks).[2] He worked on decorative painting for [Christopher Hatton Turnor](/source/Christopher_Hatton_Turnor) at [Stoke Rochford Hall](/source/Stoke_Rochford_Hall) who was opening up the family home to [summer schools](/source/Summer_school), in particular for the [Workers' Educational Association](/source/Workers'_Educational_Association).[2][3][4]

Rhoades then went into teaching, at the [Working Men's College](/source/Working_Men's_College) in [Camden Town](/source/Camden_Town), at the request of [Percy Horton](/source/Percy_Horton).[3] From 1953 he taught at the [Ruskin School of Art](/source/Ruskin_School_of_Art) in Oxford, until 1972.[2]
