**Geoffrey Frederick Hewitt** FRS[1] (3 January 1934 – 18 January 2019) was a British [chemical engineer](/source/Chemical_engineer), and [Emeritus Professor](/source/Emeritus) at [Imperial College London](/source/Imperial_College_London), where from 1993 to 1999 he was the [Courtaulds](/source/Courtaulds) Professor of chemical engineering.[2][3]

## Life

Hewitt attended [Boteler Grammar School](/source/Sir_Thomas_Boteler_Church_of_England_High_School), [Warrington](/source/Warrington)[2] and earned a BSc Tech in chemical engineering at the [University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology](/source/University_of_Manchester_Institute_of_Science_and_Technology) followed by a PhD in the same in 1957. He worked for the [United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority](/source/United_Kingdom_Atomic_Energy_Authority) until 1985 when he joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at [Imperial College London](/source/Imperial_College_London), being made Courtaulds Professor of chemical engineering in 1993 and Emeritus Professor in 1999 till his death.[4]

He died 18 January 2019.[4][5]

## Honours

Hewitt received honorary degrees from the [University of Louvain](/source/Universit%C3%A9_catholique_de_Louvain) (1988),[6] and [Heriot Watt University](/source/Heriot_Watt_University) (1995).[4][7] He was elected a [Fellow](/source/FREng) of the [Royal Academy of Engineering](/source/Royal_Academy_of_Engineering) in 1984,[8] and became a Fellow of the [Royal Society](/source/Royal_Society) in 1989,[5] In 2007 Professor Hewitt was awarded the [Global Energy Prize](/source/Global_Energy_Prize) by [Vladimir Putin](/source/Vladimir_Putin).[9] He was President of the [IChemE](/source/Institution_of_Chemical_Engineers) for 1989–1990 and received its [M. M. Sharma](/source/Man_Mohan_Sharma) Medal for his contributions in 2017.[4]
