**Geoffrey McQueen** (24 July 1947 – 6 July 1994) was a British television screenwriter and creator of the long-running [police procedural](/source/Police_procedural) *[The Bill](/source/The_Bill).*[1][*[additional citation(s) needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] He also wrote the popular comedy-dramas *[Give Us a Break](/source/Give_Us_a_Break_(TV_series))*, *[Big Deal](/source/Big_Deal_(TV_series))* and *[Stay Lucky](/source/Stay_Lucky)*.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Early in his career, he worked as a [carpenter](/source/Carpenter) and [joiner](/source/Joiner), building British-style pubs around the world.[2] He began writing for television in his early thirties.[2] His first success was in 1982 when an episode of *[The Gentle Touch](/source/The_Gentle_Touch)* he had written was broadcast.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] He originally conceived of *The Bill* as a one-off television drama which first aired on August 16, 1983.[1]

He wrote for other shows, including *[Boon](/source/Boon_(TV_series))*, and two [Jim Davidson](/source/Jim_Davidson) [sitcoms](/source/Sitcoms).

## Personal life and death

He was married to his wife Jan, and they had two children.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] His son Greg McQueen is the editor of the book *100 Stories for Haiti*.[3]

He died on 6 July 1994, aged 46, from an [aneurysm](/source/Aneurysm).
