**George Geoffrey Hickson** (born 26 September 1939) is an English former [football goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)) who played in the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) for [Crewe Alexandra](/source/Crewe_Alexandra_F.C.), [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.), [Southport](/source/Southport_F.C.) and [Stoke City](/source/Stoke_City_F.C.).[1] He won [promotion](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) out of the [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division) with Crewe in 1962–63. He is one of six post-[war](/source/World_War_II) players to have played for both the Potteries clubs and Crewe Alexandra.

## Career

Hickson was born in [Crewe](/source/Crewe) and played as an amateur for [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_City_F.C.), [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.) and [Blackburn Rovers](/source/Blackburn_Rovers_F.C.), before signing a professional [contract](/source/Association_football_contracts) at [Stoke City](/source/Stoke_City_F.C.) in 1959.[1] Long-time regular [Bill Robertson](/source/Bill_Robertson_(English_footballer)) sustained an injury in the [1959–60](/source/1959%E2%80%9360_Stoke_City_F.C._season) season, and Hickson was drafted in to provide cover.[1] He played ten [Second Division](/source/Football_League_Second_Division) matches in December through to March but was dropped after conceding five away at [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.) and [Tommy Younger](/source/Tommy_Younger) took his place for the remainder of the season.[1] He played just once more for Stoke, on the final day of the [1960–61](/source/1960%E2%80%9361_Stoke_City_F.C._season) season in a 3–1 win over Liverpool at the [Victoria Ground](/source/Victoria_Ground).[1] He joined his hometown club [Crewe Alexandra](/source/Crewe_Alexandra_F.C.) in 1962, and played 43 of the club's 46 [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division) games as [promotion](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) was achieved in [1962–63](/source/1962%E2%80%9363_in_English_football). He then featured 30 times in the [1963–64](/source/1963%E2%80%9364_in_English_football) season, as [Jimmy McGuigan](/source/Jimmy_McGuigan)'s "Railwaymen" were [relegated](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) straight back out of the [Third Division](/source/Football_League_Third_Division). He lost his place at [Gresty Road](/source/Gresty_Road) under new boss [Ernie Tagg](/source/Ernie_Tagg), and featured just nine times in the [1966–67](/source/1966%E2%80%9367_in_English_football) campaign and was completely absent in the [1965–66](/source/1965%E2%80%9366_in_English_football) and [1967–68](/source/1967%E2%80%9368_in_English_football) campaigns. He was [loaned](/source/Loan_(sports)) to Fourth Division side [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) in August 1968, as [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) [Gordon Lee](/source/Gordon_Lee_(footballer)) needed cover for the injured [Stuart Sharratt](/source/Stuart_Sharratt).[2] Described as a "part-time, pipe-smoking civil servant", he featured for the "Valiants" in the next twenty matches, but was recalled by Crewe in November that year.[2] He later played for [Southport](/source/Southport_F.C.) and played three Third Division games for the "Sandgrounders". He also had a loan spell with [Shrewsbury Town](/source/Shrewsbury_Town_F.C.) but did not take to the field at [Gay Meadow](/source/Gay_Meadow). He later emigrated to South Africa to play for [Cape Town City](/source/Cape_Town_City_F.C._(NFL)).
