==History==
On 3 December 2010, the [Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government](/source/Secretary_of_State_for_Communities_and_Local_Government) announced the formation of GeoPlace to provide a freely-available national address gazetteer. The venture underwent a process of approval by the [Office of Fair Trading](/source/Office_of_Fair_Trading), which passed a judgement allowing the venture on 15 February 2011.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20111110085529/http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/mergers_ea02/2011/OS-LGID.pdf OFT decision] - archived edition of full text published on 23 February 2011. In 2020, GeoPlace [Unique Property Reference Number](/source/Unique_Property_Reference_Number) (UPRN) and [Unique Street Reference Number](/source/Unique_Street_Reference_Number) (USRN) data used to identify homes and streets was made freely available, opening up opportunities for the development of 'property passports' and logbooks,<ref name="Eye">{{cite news |last1=Shoffman |first1=Marc |title=Industry groups take first steps towards system for property passports and logbooks |url=https://propertyindustryeye.com/industry-groups-take-first-steps-towards-system-for-property-passports-and-logbooks/ |access-date=30 September 2021 |work=Property Industry Eye |date=9 June 2020}}</ref> as well as supporting other government departments such as the [Department for Transport](/source/Department_for_Transport).<ref name="Ames-15Jul2021">{{cite news |last1=Ames |first1=Chris |title=Streetworks by Numbers |url=https://www.highwaysmagazine.co.uk/Streetworks-by-numbers/8438 |access-date=30 September 2021 |work=Highways Magazine |date=15 July 2020}}</ref>

==Activities==
GeoPlace oversees the [National Land and Property Gazetteer](/source/National_Land_and_Property_Gazetteer) (NLPG), the [National Street Gazetteer](/source/National_Street_Gazetteer) (NSG) and the [National Address Gazetteer](/source/National_Address_Gazetteer). The National Land and Property Gazetteer has been synchronised with address data from Ordnance Survey - [Address Layer 2 (AL2)](/source/OS_MasterMap). AL2 also incorporates Royal Mail [Postcode Address File](/source/Postcode_Address_File) data. The combination of datasets from Local Government and Ordnance Survey is designed to create one definitive national address gazetteer. Through agreement with Scotland's Improvement Service Company, coverage has been extended to include Scotland.
