== History ==
Genfare's origins can be traced to Johnson Farebox, whose founder, [Tom L. Johnson](/source/Tom_L._Johnson), invented the first transit farebox in 1880.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Sheridan |first=Michael J. |title=The Story of The Johnson Farebox Company |url=http://www.johnsonfarebox.com/ |access-date=2024-07-27 |website=www.johnsonfarebox.com}}</ref> Johnson later acquired Cleveland Farebox, and was itself acquired by Keene Corporation in 1960.<ref>{{Cite web |last= |date=2013-01-01 |title=History drives innovation |url=https://busride.com/history-drives-innovation/ |access-date=2024-07-28 |website=BUSRide |language=en-US}}</ref>

General Fare Industries (GFI) was established by [General Signal](/source/General_Signal) in 1980.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last= |first= |date=1990-10-02 |title=GFI Marks 10 Years With Name Change |url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/1990/10/02/gfi-marks-10-years-with-name-change/ |access-date=2024-07-27 |website=[Chicago Tribune](/source/Chicago_Tribune) |language=en-US}}</ref><ref name=":1">{{Cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=HhdpJ__kW_IC&dq=general+farebox+duncan&pg=PA26 |title=Fare Collection Program Implementation Plan |date=1984-12-07 |publisher=[Urban Mass Transportation Administration](/source/Urban_Mass_Transportation_Administration) Fare Collection Task Force |via=[Google Books](/source/Google_Books)}}</ref> GFI merged with Keene in 1981, and acquired the farebox business of Duncan Industries in 1983.<ref name=":1" /> In 1990, the company was renamed GFI Genfare.<ref name=":0" />

In 1998, General Signal was purchased by SPX Corporation, and GFI Genfare became a subsidiary of SPX.<ref>{{Cite web |date=1998-08-01 |title=SPX purchases General Signal for $2 billion |url=https://www.controleng.com/articles/spx-purchases-general-signal-for-2-billion/ |access-date=2024-07-27 |website=Control Engineering |language=en-US}}</ref> The company took on its parent's name in 2012, becoming known as SPX Genfare, but was later rebranded simply as Genfare in 2016.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2023-01-24 |title=About Us |url=https://genfare.com/about-us/ |access-date=2024-07-28 |website=Genfare |language=en-US}}</ref>
