***Genes & Development*** is a [peer-reviewed](/source/Peer-reviewed) [scientific journal](/source/Scientific_journal) covering [molecular biology](/source/Molecular_biology), [molecular genetics](/source/Molecular_genetics), [cell biology](/source/Cell_biology), and [development](/source/Developmental_biology). It was established in 1987 and is published twice monthly by [Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press](/source/Cold_Spring_Harbor_Laboratory_Press) in association with [The Genetics Society](/source/The_Genetics_Society).[1]

According to the *[Journal Citation Reports](/source/Journal_Citation_Reports)*, the journal has a 2012 [impact factor](/source/Impact_factor) of 12.44, ranking it 14th out of 181 journals in the category "Cell Biology",[2] third out of 40 journals in the category "Developmental Biology",[3] and 7th out of 158 journals in the category "Genetics & Heredity".[4] Over 1999–2004, the journal was ranked fifth in the "Molecular Biology and Genetics" category according to *ScienceWatch*, with an average of 47 citations per paper.[5] All issues are available online via the journal website as [PDFs](/source/Portable_Document_Format), with a text version additionally available from August 1997. Content over 6 months old is freely available.

Since 2025, the current [editor-in-chief](/source/Editor-in-chief) is Andrew Dillin ([University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California%2C_Berkeley)), succeeding [Terri Grodzicker](/source/Terri_Grodzicker) ([Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory](/source/Cold_Spring_Harbor_Laboratory)), who had served in this role since 1989.[6]
