==Career==

Stuart's first found success when [Larry Cunningham](/source/Larry_Cunningham) left the [Mighty Avons](/source/Mighty_Avons) showband in 1969, after auditioning he landed the role of lead singer.  After charting in Ireland on many occasions he later left the Mighty Avons in 1974 to form his own band – The Homesteaders.<ref name="irishnews.com"/><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.theirishworld.com/irish-country-music-says-farewell-to-mighty-avon-gene-stuart/|title=Irish Country music says farewell to Mighty Avon Gene Stuart – The Irish World|date=17 February 2016}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://iangallagher.com/mightyavons.html|title=mightyavons|website=iangallagher.com}}</ref>
Prior to finding fame, Stuart worked as a brick-layer and as a photographer with the Dungannon Observer newspaper.<ref name="irishnews.com"/>
