**Gechingen** (ˈɡɛçɪŋən) is a municipality in the district of [Calw](/source/Calw_(district)) in [Baden-Württemberg](/source/Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg) in [Germany](/source/Germany).

## History

Gechingen was first mentioned in 1110 as a fief of the [County of Calw](/source/County_of_Calw) in a document outlining gifts made by local nobility to [Hirsau Abbey](/source/Hirsau_Abbey). Lordship over Gechingen was inherited by the [County Palatine of Tübingen](/source/County_Palatine_of_T%C3%BCbingen), who sold the town to [Herrenalb Abbey](/source/Herrenalb_Abbey) in 1308 or 1309. As a result of the [Protestant Reformation](/source/Protestant_Reformation), Herrenalb Abbey was secularized and its holdings seized by the [Duchy of Württemberg](/source/Duchy_of_W%C3%BCrttemberg), whose government assigned the town to the [monastic office](/source/Pfleghof) at [Merklingen](/source/Merklingen). In 1808, Gechingen was made a municipality and assigned to [Oberamt Calw](/source/Oberamt_Calw). That district was reformed in 1938 as [Landkreis Calw](/source/Landkreis_Calw), and Gechingen remained in its jurisdiction. Gechingen grew slowly in the years after [World War II](/source/World_War_II) and not see significant [urban growth](/source/Urban_growth) until the 1960s.[2]

## Geography

The municipality (*[Gemeinde](/source/Municipalities_of_Germany)*) of Gechingen is located at the western edge of [the district](/source/Calw_(district)) of [Calw](/source/Calw), along its border with [the district](/source/B%C3%B6blingen_(district)) of [Böblingen](/source/B%C3%B6blingen). Gechingen is physically located in the [Heckengäu](/source/Heckeng%C3%A4u) and Schlehengäu regions of the [Black Forest](/source/Black_Forest), within the greater region of the [Upper Gäu](/source/Upper_G%C3%A4u). Elevation above sea level in the municipal area ranges from a high of 757 meters (2,484 ft) [Normalnull](/source/Normalnull) (NN) to a low of 455 meters (1,493 ft) NN.[2]

A portion of the Federally protected [Würm-Heckengäu](/source/W%C3%BCrm-Heckeng%C3%A4u) [nature reserve](/source/Naturschutzgebiet) is located in Gechingen's municipal area.[2]

## Politics

Gechingen has one borough (*Ortsteil*), Gechingen, and four villages: Berghöfe, Bergwald, Dachtgrubenhöfe, and Waldhof. Gechingen is a member of the Althengstett [Municipal Association](/source/Municipal_association_(Germany)) with the municipalities of [Althengstett](/source/Althengstett), [Ostelsheim](/source/Ostelsheim), and [Simmozheim](/source/Simmozheim).[2]

### Coat of arms

Gechingen's [coat of arms](/source/Coat_of_arms) displays a [lion](/source/Lions_in_heraldry), in [red](/source/Gules), standing on a [blue](/source/Azure_(heraldry)), [three-pointed hill](/source/Mount_(heraldry)) and facing to the left with a blue [crosier](/source/Crosier) in its forepaws, upon a [field](/source/Field_(heraldry)) of [yellow](/source/Or_(heraldry)). This coat of arms was created with advice from the [Central State Archive Stuttgart](/source/Central_State_Archive_Stuttgart), as Gechingen did not have one and instead used the [coat of arms of Württemberg](/source/Coat_of_arms_of_W%C3%BCrttemberg) in its [seals](/source/Seal_(emblem)). The lion upon the hill is taken from the arms of the Counts of Calw, while the crosier references Herrenalb Abbey. The [Federal Ministry of the Interior](/source/Federal_Ministry_of_the_Interior,_Building_and_Community) awarded this coat of arms to Gechingen alongside a municipal flag on 18 July 1955.[2]
