## History

The constituency was created in 1984 from a Dhaka constituency when the former Dhaka District was split into six districts: [Manikganj](/source/Manikganj_District), [Munshiganj](/source/Munshiganj_District), [Dhaka](/source/Dhaka_District), [Gazipur](/source/Gazipur_District), [Narsingdi](/source/Narsingdi_District), and [Narayanganj](/source/Narayanganj_District).

Ahead of the [2008 general election](/source/2008_Bangladeshi_general_election), the [Election Commission](/source/Bangladesh_Election_Commission) redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the [2001 Bangladesh census](/source/2001_Bangladesh_census).[2] The 2008 redistricting added a fifth seat to Gazipur District and altered the boundaries of Gazipur-2.[3]
