**Gavin Greenaway** (born 15 June 1964) is an English music [composer](/source/Composer) and [conductor](/source/Conducting). He is the son of [Roger Greenaway](/source/Roger_Greenaway).[1]

## Early life and career

Educated at [Strode's College](/source/Strode's_College) and [Trinity College of Music](/source/Trinity_College_of_Music), Greenaway started working with his father before leaving school. Their compositions for BBC children's television include *[Jimbo and the Jet-Set](/source/Jimbo_and_the_Jet-Set)*, *[The Family Ness](/source/The_Family_Ness)* and *[Penny Crayon](/source/Penny_Crayon)*, as well as [Channel 4](/source/Channel_4)'s 1996 drama *[The Fragile Heart](/source/The_Fragile_Heart)*.

Greenaway also conducted the scores for the films *[The Thin Red Line](/source/The_Thin_Red_Line_(1998_film))*, *[Gladiator](/source/Gladiator_(2000_film))* and *[Pearl Harbor](/source/Pearl_Harbor_(film))*, all of which were composed by [Hans Zimmer](/source/Hans_Zimmer). He also conducted many scores for [DreamWorks Animation](/source/DreamWorks_Animation) such as *[Shrek](/source/Shrek)*, *[Chicken Run](/source/Chicken_Run)*, *[Antz](/source/Antz)*, *[Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit](/source/Wallace_%26_Gromit%3A_The_Curse_of_the_Were-Rabbit)*, *[The Prince of Egypt](/source/The_Prince_of_Egypt)*, *[Bee Movie](/source/Bee_Movie)*, and *[The Road to El Dorado](/source/The_Road_to_El_Dorado)*. In addition, he was commissioned by [Disney](/source/The_Walt_Disney_Company) to compose the score for their [fireworks](/source/Fireworks) show *[IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth](/source/IllumiNations%3A_Reflections_of_Earth)* and a parade called *[Tapestry of Nations](/source/Tapestry_of_Nations)* at [Epcot](/source/Epcot). The resulting music from the fireworks show have been used by Disney since 1999. With permission from Disney, who hold the rights to the composition, and the Hal Leonard Corp., who hold the publishing rights, Reflections of Earth has now been arranged for the idiom full symphonic wind band and dedicated to the Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds and their musical director Phil Evans. The first performance of this arrangement was in Radnor PA on 2 December 2012.

For [Tokyo DisneySea](/source/Tokyo_DisneySea), Greenaway composed the score for "[BraviSEAmo!](/source/BraviSEAmo!)", the nightly pyrotechnics and water show in 2004. He also conducted in [Paul McCartney](/source/Paul_McCartney)'s oratorio *[Ecce Cor Meum](/source/Ecce_Cor_Meum),* and has provided music-only soundtracks to accompany VHS-releases such as The Everton Football Club Season Review 1988/89.

His music was heard during both the 2000 [Super Bowl XXXIV](/source/Super_Bowl_XXXIV) Halftime Show and the [2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony](/source/2010_Winter_Olympics_opening_ceremony).

Greenaway was one of the composers commissioned to write music for the [Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant](/source/Thames_Diamond_Jubilee_Pageant) in 2012 to honour the [Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II](/source/Diamond_Jubilee_of_Elizabeth_II). The piece, entitled *The New Water Music*, was inspired by the [George Frederic Handel](/source/George_Frederic_Handel)'s [Water Music](/source/Water_Music_(Handel)) and contained movements by several modern British composers working under the direction of Greenaway.[2] After the pageant, Greenaway was critical of [BBC](/source/BBC)'s live coverage of the pageant, as it did not feature the performance at all.[3] In his personal blog, he expressed the view that the presenters had focused on interviewing celebrities and ignored the musicians.[4]

*Il Falco Bianco* is Gavin Greenaway's first solo piano album, released in May 2016.[5]

He has also recently conducted music for the *Star Wars* anthology film, *[Solo: A Star Wars Story](/source/Solo%3A_A_Star_Wars_Story)*.
