{{short description|Swedish student party}}
{{other uses}}
A '''gask''', or '''gasque''', is a kind of [Swedish](/source/Sweden) [student](/source/student) [party](/source/party) which starts with a more or less [formal dinner](/source/formal_dinner). The word is believed to have originated from the card game [Vira](/source/Vira_(game)), popular in the 19th century.

==Background==
In some cities, gask is generally used to refer to a party with a formal dress code. Students at [Stockholm University](/source/Stockholm_University) and the [Royal Institute of Technology](/source/Royal_Institute_of_Technology) generally use the term gasque to refer to a gask where the dress code is a [student boilersuit](/source/student_boilersuit).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.uppsalastudentkar.se/international-students/life-uppsala/useful-links/going-gasque|title=GOING TO A GASQUE|access-date=4 October 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190908154206/https://www.uppsalastudentkar.se/international-students/life-uppsala/useful-links/going-gasque|archive-date=8 September 2019|publisher=Uppsala Studentkår}}</ref>

In some cases, gasque might also be the name of an actual building, often a building belonging to the [student union](/source/Students'_union) arranging the gasque, as in the case of [Chalmers University of Technology](/source/Chalmers_University_of_Technology) in [Gothenburg](/source/Gothenburg).

Many universities also have thematic gasques, as well as slasques (pun on "slask", 'slush, slop'), which are less tidy gatherings.{{Citation needed|date=October 2008}}
