'''Gasherbrum''' ({{langx|ur|{{Nastaliq|گاشر برم}}}}) is a remote group of [peaks](/source/mountain) situated at the northeastern end of the [Baltoro Glacier](/source/Baltoro_Glacier) in the [Karakoram](/source/Karakoram) mountain range.{{Dubious|date=December 2024|reason=According to Karakoram-article there are four mountains?}} The peaks are located within the border region of [Gilgit-Baltistan](/source/Gilgit-Baltistan), [Pakistan occupied Kashmir](/source/Pakistan_occupied_Kashmir) region and [Xinjiang](/source/Xinjiang), [China](/source/China). The [massif](/source/massif) contains three of the world's [8,000 metre peaks](/source/eight-thousander) (if [Broad Peak](/source/Broad_Peak) is included).
The highly visible face of [Gasherbrum IV](/source/Gasherbrum_IV) has gained the nickname the "Shining Wall" and this has often been claimed as the meaning of the word "Gasherbrum".
<ref>{{cite web  | title = Top Expeditions 1970-2020, #6: Gasherbrum IV's Shining Wall | website =Explorers Web| date= 26 December 2020|  first =Angela | last =  Benavides    |   access-date = 26 April 2024 |url = https://explorersweb.com/top-expeditions-1970-2020-6-gasherbrum-ivs-shining-wall/ }}</ref> However the name Gasherbrum comes from "rgasha" (beautiful) + "brum" (mountain) in [Balti](/source/Balti_language), hence it actually means "beautiful mountain".<ref>{{cite journal | title = Balti Place Names in the Karakoram | journal =American Alpine Journal|  issn=   0065-6925 |  date= 1975|  first =H. == History ==
In 1856, [Thomas George Montgomerie](/source/Thomas_George_Montgomerie), a British [Royal Engineers](/source/Royal_Engineers) lieutenant and a member of the [Great Trigonometric Survey](/source/Great_Trigonometric_Survey) of [India](/source/India), sighted a group of high peaks in the Karakoram from more than 200 km away. He named five of these peaks K1, K2, K3, K4 and K5, where the "K" denotes Karakoram. Today, K1 is known as [Masherbrum](/source/Masherbrum), K3 as [Gasherbrum IV](/source/Gasherbrum_IV), K4 as [Gasherbrum II](/source/Gasherbrum_II) and K5 as [Gasherbrum I](/source/Gasherbrum_I). Only [K2](/source/K2), the second highest mountain in the world, has retained Montgomerie's name. Broad Peak was thought to miss out on a K-number as it was hidden from Montgomerie's view by Masherbrum.
