**Gary L. Smith Jr.** (born August 27, 1972), is an American [attorney](/source/Lawyer) from his native [Norco](/source/Norco,_Louisiana) in [St. Charles Parish](/source/St._Charles_Parish,_Louisiana), [Louisiana](/source/Louisiana), who is a former [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) member of the [Louisiana State Senate](/source/Louisiana_State_Senate) for [District 19](/source/Louisiana's_19th_State_Senate_district), a position which he held from 2012 to 2024.

He succeeded the [term-limited](/source/Term_limits) Democratic Senator [Joel T. Chaisson, II](/source/Joel_T._Chaisson,_II).

## Personal life and education

Smith graduated in 1990 from [Destrehan High School](/source/Destrehan_High_School) in [Destrehan](/source/Destrehan,_Louisiana) in St. Charles Parish. In 1994, he earned a [Bachelor of Business Administration](/source/Bachelor_of_Business_Administration) degree from [Louisiana State University](/source/Louisiana_State_University) in [Baton Rouge](/source/Baton_Rouge,_Louisiana). He earned his [Juris Doctor](/source/Juris_Doctor) from [Loyola University New Orleans College of Law](/source/Loyola_University_New_Orleans_College_of_Law) in 1998 and an [LLM](/source/Master_of_Laws) from [Tulane Law School](/source/Tulane_Law_School) in 1999.[1] He is married to Katherine Mosley, the granddaughter of U.S. Senator [Russell Long](/source/Russell_Long) and the great-granddaughter of Louisiana Governor [Huey Long](/source/Huey_Long).[citation needed]

## Career

Smith interned for [Senator](/source/United_States_Senate) [John Breaux](/source/John_Breaux) and Congressman [Billy Tauzin](/source/Billy_Tauzin). Smith was elected to the [Louisiana House of Representatives](/source/Louisiana_House_of_Representatives) in 2000, and to the [Louisiana State Senate](/source/Louisiana_State_Senate) in 2012.[2]
