**Gary Holland** (born **Gary Hallinan**; September 14, 1958)[1] is an American [hard rock](/source/Hard_rock) and [heavy metal](/source/Heavy_metal_music) drummer who worked in the 1980s with bands originating from California. He is perhaps best known for being the original drummer in [Great White](/source/Great_White) and for his brief stint in [Dokken](/source/Dokken). He later played as a session musician and soundtrack contributor.

## Career

Holland was born in [Syracuse, New York](/source/Syracuse%2C_New_York). After high school, he moved to Los Angeles, where he co-founded a rock trio called Suite 19, playing clubs in Hollywood and the surrounding areas.[2] By 1980, Holland was a member of an early version of [Dokken](/source/Dokken), headlining one tour of Europe.[3] After leaving Dokken in 1981, he was briefly a member of Sister, which later became [W.A.S.P.](/source/W.A.S.P._(band))[4]

A chance encounter with Dante Fox guitarist, Mark Kendall, at [The Troubadour](/source/Troubadour_(West_Hollywood%2C_California)) in [West Hollywood](/source/West_Hollywood%2C_California) led to an audition. Holland officially joined Kendall, vocalist [Jack Russell](/source/Jack_Russell_(musician)), and bassist Don Costa in Dante Fox in November 1981. After replacing Costa with Lorne Black in 1982, Dante Fox changed their name to [Great White](/source/Great_White).[2] Holland appeared on Great White's EP *[Out of the Night](/source/Out_of_the_Night)* and on the albums *[Great White](/source/Great_White_(album))* and *[Recovery: Live!](/source/Recovery%3A_Live!)*, as well as in the music videos for the songs "Stick It" and "[Substitute](/source/Substitute_(The_Who_song))".[5]

Holland was a founding member of Britton and provided drums and backing vocals on the group's 1988 release, *Rock Hard*. He toured Europe as the drummer for [Blue Cheer](/source/Blue_Cheer) in 1993,[6] and provided backing vocals on [Ozzy Osbourne](/source/Ozzy_Osbourne)'s albums *[Ozzmosis](/source/Ozzmosis)* and *[Prince of Darkness](/source/Prince_of_Darkness_(Ozzy_Osbourne_album))*. Holland worked also on [Twisted Sister](/source/Twisted_Sister)'s *[Come Out and Play](/source/Come_Out_and_Play_(Twisted_Sister_album))*, on [Autograph](/source/Autograph_(American_band))'s *[That's the Stuff](/source/That's_the_Stuff)* and on [Don Dokken](/source/Don_Dokken)'s *[Up from the Ashes](/source/Up_from_the_Ashes_(Don_Dokken_album))*.[1] He also collaborated with [Mike Inez](/source/Mike_Inez) of [Alice in Chains](/source/Alice_in_Chains)[1] and [Gilby Clarke](/source/Gilby_Clarke) of [Guns N' Roses](/source/Guns_N'_Roses).

He supported tours for [Whitesnake](/source/Whitesnake) (UK), [Motörhead](/source/Mot%C3%B6rhead) (US) and [Judas Priest](/source/Judas_Priest) (North America).

## Equipment

In 2001, Holland used [Mapex Drums](/source/Mapex_Drums), Aquarian heads, RIMS drum mounts and [Paiste](/source/Paiste) cymbals with [Pro-Mark](/source/Pro-Mark) 2S hickory nylon tip drumsticks and [DW](/source/Drum_Workshop) 9000 bass drum pedals. For his vocals, a [Crown](/source/Crown_International) CM-311A headset vocal mic.[7]
