A graduate of [Ripon College](/source/Ripon_College_(Wisconsin)) with B.A. in philosophy, he later undertook post-graduate work at the [American University of Beirut](/source/American_University_of_Beirut) and spent more than a decade in Europe and the Middle East, reporting for [Time Life](/source/Time_Life), [ABC News](/source/ABC_News_(United_States)), ''The Christian Science Monitor'', the ''[International Herald Tribune](/source/International_Herald_Tribune)'' and other U.S. news organizations. He was also a staff reporter for [Bloomberg BNA](/source/Bloomberg_BNA) covering Congress and the Executive Branch. He has reported from India, Morocco, Malaysia, China, Singapore, Colombia, Canada, Poland, Latvia, Estonia and many other countries and has interviewed and written profiles of dozens of famous and not-so-famous individuals—from influential [jazz](/source/jazz) drummer [Art Taylor](/source/Art_Taylor) to [civil rights movement](/source/civil_rights_movement) icon [John Lewis](/source/John_Lewis) and award-winning Mexican poet and environmental activist [Homero Aridjis](/source/Homero_Aridjis). He has also served in the [United States Air Force](/source/United_States_Air_Force) and is a former pilot.
