**Garry Chalk** (born February 17, 1952)[1][2] is an English born Canadian actor. He has provided the voices for Optimus Primal of *[Beast Wars: Transformers](/source/Beast_Wars%3A_Transformers)* and *[Beast Machines: Transformers](/source/Beast_Machines%3A_Transformers)*, as well as [Optimus Prime](/source/Optimus_Prime) in the [anime](/source/Anime) [English dubs](/source/Dubbing_(filmmaking)) of *[Transformers: Armada](/source/Transformers%3A_Armada)*, *[Transformers Energon](/source/Transformers_Energon)*, and *[Transformers: Cybertron](/source/Transformers%3A_Cybertron)*.[2] Chalk's live-action performances include *[The Fly II](/source/The_Fly_II)*, *[Godzilla](/source/Godzilla_(2014_film))*, *[Freddy vs. Jason](/source/Freddy_vs._Jason)*, *[Stargate SG-1](/source/Stargate_SG-1)*, and *[Cold Squad](/source/Cold_Squad)*.

## Early life

Chalk was born in [Southampton](/source/Southampton), [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire) in 1952. At the age of 5, his family moved to [Vancouver](/source/Vancouver), [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), Canada.[3]

## Career

Chalk has been involved with theatre since 1978 and has performed at the [Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company](/source/Vancouver_Playhouse_Theatre_Company) (VPTC), the [Arts Club Theatre Company](/source/Arts_Club_Theatre_Company) (ACTC), [The Vancouver Theatresports League](/source/The_Improv_Centre) and various low-budget theatres in Canada. Chalk's last live stage production was *[A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum](/source/A_Funny_Thing_Happened_on_the_Way_to_the_Forum)*, where he played [Miles Gloriosus](/source/Miles_Gloriosus). He also performed in *Henry IV* and *[As You Like It](/source/As_You_Like_It)* at the VPTC, as well as *Dracula* and *Passion* at the ACTC.

Most of his career has been in film and television, usually portraying corrupt members of law enforcement. He had a recurring role on *[Cold Squad](/source/Cold_Squad)* for four years, for which he won [Gemini Awards](/source/Gemini_Awards) in two consecutive years, and until the close of its ninth season had a recurring role on the science-fiction series *[Stargate SG-1](/source/Stargate_SG-1)*. Known for his enunciation and mellifluous deep voice, Chalk is also a veteran of over 1,500 animated productions including *[Class of the Titans](/source/Class_of_the_Titans)*, and the 2002 remake of *[He-Man and the Masters of the Universe](/source/He-Man_and_the_Masters_of_the_Universe_(2002_TV_series))*. He is also known for his voice work in the *[Transformers](/source/Transformers)* franchise as the voice of [Optimus Primal](/source/Optimus_Primal) in *[Beast Wars](/source/Beast_Wars%3A_Transformers)* and *[Beast Machines](/source/Beast_Machines%3A_Transformers)*, and as [Optimus Prime](/source/Optimus_Prime) in the [Unicron Trilogy](/source/Unicron_Trilogy). He also voiced the original [Megatron](/source/Megatron) in an episode of *Beast Wars*.

In the 2000s, he appeared in the Sci-Fi Channel shows *[Eureka](/source/Eureka_(2006_TV_series))*, as Col. Briggs and *[Painkiller Jane](/source/Painkiller_Jane_(TV_series))*, as Ruben Hennessey.[4]

## Personal life

Chalk has been married to his wife [Colleen Hardwick](/source/Colleen_Hardwick) (née Nystedt) since September 2013.[1]

In 2024, Chalk was diagnosed with stage 4 [Hodgkin lymphoma](/source/Hodgkin_lymphoma).[5]. On February 24, 2026, Chalk confirmed he had gone into remission.[6]
