# Garrett Subdivision

The **Garrett Subdivision** is a [railroad](/source/Railroad) line owned and operated by [CSX Transportation](/source/CSX_Transportation) in the [U.S. states](/source/U.S._state) of [Ohio](/source/Ohio) and [Indiana](/source/Indiana). The line runs from [Deshler, Ohio](/source/Deshler,_Ohio), west to [Willow Creek, Indiana](/source/Willow_Creek,_Indiana) (in [Portage](/source/Portage,_Indiana)),[1][2] along a former [Baltimore and Ohio Railroad](/source/Baltimore_and_Ohio_Railroad) (B&O) line. At its east end, just east of Deshler, the Garrett Subdivision becomes the [Willard Subdivision](/source/Willard_Subdivision). The line crosses the [Toledo Subdivision](/source/Toledo_Subdivision) at Deshler and ends at the junction with the [Porter Subdivision](/source/Porter_Subdivision) and [Barr Subdivision](/source/Barr_Subdivision) at Willow Creek.

## History

The line was opened by the [Baltimore and Ohio and Chicago Railroad](/source/Baltimore_and_Ohio_and_Chicago_Railroad) in 1874.[3] It became part of the B&O and CSX through leases and mergers.

Derailments occurred on the line in 2002, 2010,[4][better source needed] on January 6, 2012 (near [Portage, Indiana](/source/Portage,_Indiana))[5] on April 22, 2014 (near [Saint Joe, Indiana](/source/Saint_Joe,_Indiana)),[6][7] and on July 21, 2021 (near [Auburn, Indiana](/source/Auburn,_Indiana)).[8]
