**Garhwa district** is one of the twenty-four districts in the [Indian](/source/India) [state](/source/States_and_territories_of_India) of [Jharkhand](/source/Jharkhand). The Garhwa District is part of the [Palamu](/source/Palamu_division) division and has its administrative headquarters in [Garhwa](/source/Garhwa) City.Garhwa district is located in west northern part of Jharkhand.

## History

The Garhwa District was established on April 1, 1991, from the former [Palamu district](/source/Palamu_district), by separating its former Garhwa sub-division. It has been a part of the [Red Corridor](/source/Red_Corridor) since 2011.[1]

## Administration

The Garhwa district includes three subdivisions: [Garhwa](/source/Garhwa), [Nagar Untari](/source/Nagar_Untari) and [Ranka](/source/Ranka_Garhwa), which are further divided into 20 [blocks](/source/Community_development_block_in_India).

This district comprises a 156-[gram panchayat](/source/Gram_panchayat) and 916 villages.

It has three police sub-divisions: [Garhwa](/source/Garhwa), [Shree Banshidhar Nagar](/source/Nagar_Untari) and [Ranka](/source/Ranka_Garhwa), with 18 police stations in [Bhandaria](/source/Bhandaria%2C_Garhwa), [Ramkanda](/source/Ramkanda_Garhwa), [Chinia](/source/Chinia_Garhwa), [Dandai](/source/Dandai_Garhwa), [Danda](/source/Danda_Garhwa), [Kandi](/source/Kandi%2C_Garhwa), [Bardiha](/source/Bardiha_Garhwa), [Ketar](/source/Ketar_Garhwa), [Kharaundhi](/source/Kharaundhi_Garhwa), [Bhawnathpur](/source/Bhawnathpur_Garhwa), [Dhurki](/source/Dhurki_Garhwa), [Ramna](/source/Ramna_Garhwa), [Bishunpura](/source/Bishunpura_Garhwa), [Garhwa](/source/Garhwa), [Manjhiaon Garhwa](/source/Manjhiaon_Garhwa), Meral, [Shree Banshidhar Nagar](/source/Nagar_Untari) and [Ranka](/source/Ranka_Garhwa).

## Geography

The Garhwa district lies between 23° 60’ and 24° 39’ north [latitude](/source/Latitude) and 83° 22’ and 84° 00’ east [longitude](/source/Longitude). It is bordered by the [Son River](/source/Son_River) to the north, the Palamau district of [Jharkhand](/source/Jharkhand) state to the east, the [Balrampur](/source/Balrampur_district%2C_Chhattisgarh) district of [Chhattisgarh](/source/Chhattisgarh) state to the south, and the [Sonbhadra](/source/Sonbhadra_district) district of [Uttar Pradesh](/source/Uttar_Pradesh) to the west.

## Economy

In 2006, the Indian government named Garhwa District one of the 250 most backward districts in the country, out of a total of 640.[2] It is one of the 21 districts in Jharkhand state currently receiving funds from the [Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme](/source/Backward_Regions_Grant_Fund_Programme) (BRGF).[2]

## Transport

Garhwa is well-connected to roads and railways. Daily bus services are available from [Ranchi](/source/Ranchi) and the much bigger districts of [Jharkhand](/source/Jharkhand), [Chhattisgarh](/source/Chhattisgarh) and [Bihar](/source/Bihar), but road connections in this district are not as high quality as others in the state. The district is connected to Rewa in [Madhya Pradesh](/source/Madhya_Pradesh) and [Ranchi](/source/Ranchi) in Jharkhand by National Highway No. 39. There are 210 km of state highway, 55 km of national highway ([NH-39](/source/National_Highway_39_(India))) and 96.95 km of district roads. There is a total of 190 km link roads and corridors.[3]

The nearest airport is located at [Varanasi](/source/Varanasi_Airport) (140 km). Garhwa Railway Station is a major railhead of the [Eastern Railway zone](/source/Eastern_Railway_zone). [National Highway 39](/source/National_Highway_39_(India)) passes through Garhwa.

The district has a population density of 327 inhabitants per square kilometre (850/sq mi). Its [population growth rate](/source/Family_planning_in_India) over the decade 2001-2011 was 27.71%. Garhwa has a [sex ratio](/source/Sex_ratio) of 933 [females](/source/Women_in_India) for every 1,000 males, and a [literacy rate](/source/Literacy_in_India) of 60.33%. 5.27% of the population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up 24.19% and 15.56% of the population respectively.[8]

## Politics

Garhwa has two assembly constituencies, [Garhwa](/source/Garhwa_Assembly_constituency) and [Bhawanthpur](/source/Bhawanathpur_Assembly_constituency). Both are part of [Palamu Lok Sabha constituency](/source/Palamu_Lok_Sabha_constituency), whose MP is [Vishnu Dayal Ram](/source/Vishnu_Dayal_Ram) from the [BJP](/source/Bharatiya_Janata_Party).
