'''Ganzee''' (also '''Gansee''') is a former village in the [Brokopondo District](/source/Brokopondo_District) of [Suriname](/source/Suriname). The village was home to [Maroons](/source/Maroon_people) of the [Saramaka](/source/Saramaka) tribe, and located on the [Suriname River](/source/Suriname_River). In 1965, the village was flooded after the construction of the [Afobaka Dam](/source/Afobaka_Dam).<ref name="werkgroep"/>

==History==
The village was founded in the interior of Suriname by runaway slaves. From 1765 onwards, the [Moravian Church](/source/Moravian_Church) embarked on missionary activities among the maroons. First the focus was on converting people. In 1850, the first school in the interior was opened in Ganzee.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.dbsuriname.com/2018/09/05/van-aanvang-tot-heden-onderwijs-in-het-binnenland-deel-1/ |title=Van aanvang tot heden, onderwijs in het binnenland (deel 1)|website=Dagblad Suriname|access-date=15 February 2021|language=nl}}</ref> In 1919, the village had a population of about 500 people and was the capital of the Upper Suriname district.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00099461/00011/57?search=gansee |title=Nieuwe West-Indische gids|website=University of Florida|year=1919|access-date=15 February 2021|language=nl|page=110}}</ref> In 1931, a clinic was established in the village.<ref>{{cite web|title=DE EVANGELISCHE BROEDERGEMEENTE IN SURINAME|author=J.W. van Lynden|url=https://docplayer.nl/18718435-De-evangelische-broedergemeente-in-suriname.html|year=1935|website=Docplayer|access-date=15 February 2021|language=nl}}</ref>

In 1958, plans were developed to create the [Afobaka Dam](/source/Afobaka_Dam) in order to provide electricity for the aluminium industry. The damming of the [Suriname River](/source/Suriname_River) would lead to the [Brokopondo Reservoir](/source/Brokopondo_Reservoir), and flood the village of Ganzee.<ref name="herald"/> With an estimated 1,200 people, Ganzee was the biggest village in the area.<ref name="werkgroep"/> In 1964, the villagers were transmigrated to [Klaaskreek](/source/Klaaskreek) and [Nieuw-Ganzee](/source/Nieuw-Ganzee).<ref name="herald">{{cite news|url=https://www.srherald.com/ingezonden/2019/02/01/nostalgie-en-toch-toekomstgericht-denken-en-handelen/ |title=Nostalgie en toch toekomstgericht denken en handelen|website=Suriname Herald|access-date=15 February 2021|language=nl}}</ref>
