**Gallitos de Isabela** are a professional [basketball](/source/Basketball) team based in [Isabela, Puerto Rico](/source/Isabela%2C_Puerto_Rico), currently competing in the [Liga de Baloncesto Puertorriqueña](/source/Liga_de_Baloncesto_Puertorrique%C3%B1a), the second tier of professional basketball in [Puerto Rico](/source/Puerto_Rico). They play their home games at the [José Abreu Coliseum](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Abreu_Coliseum), refurbished in 2023 in the aftermath of [Hurricane Maria](/source/Hurricane_Maria).[1] The team was managed by legendary [Hall of Fame](/source/Naismith_Basketball_Hall_of_Fame) coach [Phil Jackson](/source/Phil_Jackson) between 1984 and 1986.

## History

In 1984, the Gallitos reached the BSN Finals, during that year known as the Copa Olimpica, due to a scandal concerning the playing eligibility of a Leones de Ponce player named [David Ponce](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=David_Ponce&action=edit&redlink=1). They lost to the defending champions, [Indios de Canovanas](/source/Indios_de_Canovanas), in six games. This was during the franchise's "golden era", when players like [Edwin Pellot](/source/Edwin_Pellot) and [Frankie Torruellas](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Frankie_Torruellas&action=edit&redlink=1) played for the Gallitos. That team was coached by American [Phil Jackson](/source/Phil_Jackson), who coached the team from 1984 to 1986, leading them to the playoffs in 1984, 1985 and 1986.[2]
