# Gale Escarpment

**Gale Escarpment** ([72°55′S 75°23′E / 72.917°S 75.383°E / -72.917; 75.383](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Gale_Escarpment&params=72_55_S_75_23_E_source:GNIS)) is a northwest-facing escarpment of rock and ice, standing eastward of [Mount Harding](/source/Mount_Harding) and [Wilson Ridge](/source/Wilson_Ridge) in the [Grove Mountains](/source/Grove_Mountains) of Antarctica. It was mapped from air photos, 1956–60, by ANAPL, and was named by the [Antarctic Names Committee of Australia](/source/Antarctic_Names_Committee_of_Australia) for [d'A.T. Gale](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=D%27A.T._Gale&action=edit&redlink=1), officer in charge of the Antarctic Mapping Branch, Australian Division of National Mapping, who has contributed substantially to Antarctic mapping.[1]
