**Gahan** is a surname of [Irish](/source/Irish_name) origin. It derives from the [Irish language](/source/Irish_language) name Ó Gaoithín, meaning "descendant of Gaoithín". The Ó Gaoithín were historically chiefs of [Síol Éalaigh](/source/Shillelagh_(barony)) and today are most prevelent in [south-eastern Ireland](/source/South-East_Region,_Ireland), particularly in the counties of [Wexford](/source/County_Wexford) and [Carlow](/source/County_Carlow). [Connacht](/source/Connacht) Ó Gaoithíns were typically [anglicised](/source/Anglicisation) as *[Wynne](/source/Wynne)* or *[Wyndham](/source/Wyndham_(disambiguation))* and are of an unrelated origin to the [Leinster](/source/Leinster) Ó Gaoithíns.[1][2]
