He is also author of Simon & Schuster's *Duck Duck Wally* and *The Human Bobby.*[1] in addition, he was a writer and producer on [season 11](/source/The_X-Files_(season_11)) of *[The X-Files](/source/The_X-Files)* which aired in 2018. ## Early life Rotter grew up in the same complex in [Woodbury, Nassau County, New York](/source/Woodbury,_Nassau_County,_New_York), as writer [Lesley Arfin](/source/Lesley_Arfin) and they both attended [Syosset High School](/source/Syosset_High_School).[2] He earned a film degree from the [University of Southern California](/source/University_of_Southern_California). Rotter began his career as a production assistant and later the writers' assistant on the paranormal television show "[The X-Files](/source/The_X-Files)," working under series creator [Chris Carter](/source/Chris_Carter_(screenwriter)). ## Career Rotter wrote his first novel, *Duck Duck Wally,* which was published by [Simon & Schuster](/source/Simon_%26_Schuster)[3] in 2008. The novel "...pays entertaining dividends in this slapstick send-up of show business in general and hip-hop in particular,” commented a Kirkus Reviews critic.[4] A Publishers Weekly reviewer noted that “Rotter’s a talented writer.” [Booklist](/source/Booklist) called the book "Clever and funny."[5] In 2010, Rotter published his second novel from Simon & Schuster, titled *The Human Bobby.* [Booklist](/source/Booklist) described the book as "An oddly constructed novel, but an oddly endearing one, too, with a protagonist you can’t help rooting for."[6] In 2014 Rotter produced a television pilot for [Amazon](/source/Amazon.com) called [The After](/source/The_After), which was written and directed by [Chris Carter](/source/Chris_Carter_(screenwriter)).[7] In 2015 Rotter was a writer/producer on [20th Century Fox Television](/source/20th_Century_Fox_Television)'s 6-episode revival of [The X-Files](/source/The_X-Files).[8] In 2017, Rotter was a writer/producer on the [eleventh season](/source/The_X-Files_(season_11)) of The X-Files on [Fox](/source/Fox_Broadcasting_Company), having written one episode titled, "[Kitten](/source/Kitten_(The_X-Files))."[9] In 2024, it was announced that Rotter created [The Beast in Me](/source/The_Beast_in_Me_(TV_series)) for [Netflix](/source/Netflix), starring [Claire Danes](/source/Claire_Danes) and [Matthew Rhys](/source/Matthew_Rhys).
