The [Glasgow and South Western Railway](/source/Glasgow_and_South_Western_Railway) (GSWR) **9 class** was a class of seven [0-4-2](/source/0-4-2) steam locomotives designed in 1857, as an enlarged version of the [105 class](/source/G%26SWR_105_Class).

## Development

The seven examples of this class were designed by [Patrick Stirling](/source/Patrick_Stirling_(railway_engineer)) for the GSWR and were built by [Neilson and Company](/source/Neilson_and_Company) (Works Nos. 398-404) between November and December 1857. They were numbered 9, 14, 15, 17, 20, 30, and 33.[1] The members of the class were fitted with [domed](/source/Steam_dome) [boilers](/source/Boiler) and [safety valves](/source/Safety_valve) over the [firebox](/source/Firebox_(steam_engine)).

## Withdrawal

No 174 was withdrawn after an accident at [Dalbeattie](/source/Dalbeattie_railway_station) in 1874, and No.20 suffered a boiler explosion at [Springhill, Glasgow](/source/Springhill%2C_Glasgow) in March 1876. The remainder were withdrawn by [James Stirling](/source/James_Stirling_(1835%E2%80%931917)) between 1874 and 1876.
