# Fut language

The **Bafut language**, ***Fut***, is an [Eastern Grassfields](/source/Grassfields_languages) language of the [Niger–Congo languages](/source/Niger%E2%80%93Congo_languages), and related to [Bamum](/source/Bamum_language). Oral tradition traces dynastic origins to the [Ndobo](/source/Ndobo) or [Tikari](/source/Tikar_language) areas. It is spoken by people of [Bafut Subdivision](/source/Bafut_Subdivision), Tuba, in the division of [Mezam](/source/Mezam) and in the division of [Metchum](/source/Metchum) in [Northwest Province, Cameroon](/source/Northwest_Province,_Cameroon).

The Bafut language was alphabetized by [SIL International](/source/SIL_International) consultant [Joseph Mfonyam](/source/Joseph_Mfonyam) in 1982. Since then, some literature has been translated into Bafut, most notably the [New Testament](/source/New_Testament) in 2000.
