In the times before the [Spanish conquest](/source/Spanish_conquest_of_the_Muisca), Funza was an important village in the [Muisca Confederation](/source/Muisca_Confederation). This loose confederation of [rulers](/source/Muisca_rulers) of the [Muisca](/source/Muisca_people) had a southern ruler, the ''[zipa](/source/zipa)'' based in [Bacatá](/source/Bacat%C3%A1), the present-day municipality of Funza.][
