The '''Fuerte River''' is a river in the state of [Sinaloa](/source/Sinaloa), in northwestern Mexico. It flows from headwaters in the [Sierra Madre Occidental](/source/Sierra_Madre_Occidental) to the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean) in the [Gulf of California](/source/Gulf_of_California).

==Course==
It begins at the junction of the [Rio Verde](/source/Rio_Verde_(Chihuahua)) (also called the Rio San Miguel) and [Urique River](/source/Urique_River), in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. It flows generally southwest for a distance of {{convert|290|km|mi}},<ref>{{Cite web |title=Fuerte River {{!}} Mexico, Map, & Facts {{!}} Britannica |url=https://www.britannica.com/place/Fuerte-River |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231004081328/https://www.britannica.com/place/Fuerte-River |archive-date=Oct 4, 2023 |access-date=2024-04-10 |website=www.britannica.com |language=en}}</ref> with its [river mouth](/source/river_mouth) on the [Gulf of California](/source/Gulf_of_California) at Lechuguilla Island, {{convert|43|km|mi}} west of the city of [Los Mochis](/source/Los_Mochis).

Miguel Hidalgo [Dam](/source/Dam) impounds the river near the town of [El Fuerte](/source/El_Fuerte%2C_Sinaloa) creating the state's largest [reservoir](/source/reservoir), Embalse de Gustavo Diaz Ordaz.<ref>[https://archive.today/20130122102353/http://www.eosnap.com/?tag=fuerte-river] Earth Snapshot website, accessed 17 September 2009</ref> The water is used extensively for agricultural irrigation in northern [Sinaloa](/source/Sinaloa) and southern [Sonora](/source/Sonora) states.

==Features==
The river is surrounded by large [mango](/source/mango) plantations which produce the fruits mainly for export to the United States. The former capitol of Sinaloa, [Sinaloa de Leyva](/source/Sinaloa_de_Leyva), is on the river in the Fuerte River Valley, in the Sierra Madre Occidental foothills.
