**Frome Road** is a connecting road in the [South Australian](/source/South_Australia) capital city of [Adelaide](/source/Adelaide). It starts from [North Terrace](/source/North_Terrace%2C_Adelaide) in the [Adelaide city centre](/source/Adelaide_city_centre), running in a northerly direction past the [University of South Australia](/source/University_of_South_Australia), the site of the old [Royal Adelaide Hospital](/source/Royal_Adelaide_Hospital), now known as [Lot Fourteen](/source/Lot_Fourteen), the [Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science](/source/Institute_of_Medical_and_Veterinary_Science) and the [University of Adelaide](/source/University_of_Adelaide), and then through the [Adelaide Parklands](/source/Adelaide_Parklands) to the [Adelaide Zoo](/source/Adelaide_Zoo) where it turns northeasterly, crosses the [River Torrens](/source/River_Torrens) via Albert Bridge, and continues through the parklands to the intersection with [Melbourne Street](/source/Melbourne_Street%2C_North_Adelaide) and [Brougham Place](/source/Brougham_Place) in [North Adelaide](/source/North_Adelaide).[2] It is one of the three roads connecting the city centre to [North Adelaide](/source/North_Adelaide), the others being [King William Road](/source/King_William_Road%2C_Adelaide) and [Montefiore Road](/source/Morphett_Street).

The road (and street) are named after [Edward Charles Frome](/source/Edward_Charles_Frome), a [Surveyor General](/source/Surveyor_General) of South Australia.[3]

Frome Road is continued south into the city square as [Frome Street](/source/Frome_Street), which was built in the 1960s and runs through the Adelaide city centre from North Terrace to [Carrington Street](/source/Carrington_Street).

[Adelaide Botanic High School](/source/Adelaide_Botanic_High_School) opened in January 2019 on Frome Road.[4]

In 2024-2025, the [Frome Street](/source/Frome_Street) Bikeway was extended along Frome Road.[5][6]

## Albert Bridge

The Albert Bridge was constructed in 1879. An earlier bridge on the site was washed away by flood water in the 1840s. The bridge has a central span of 60 feet (18 m) with two end spans of 30 feet (9.1 m) each. The supports are caissons filled with concrete. the cast-iron work was imported from England. Abutments, piers and wing walls are sandstone from [Tea Tree Gully](/source/Tea_Tree_Gully). The bridge was redecked in the 1950s and again in 1982, including additional structural members.[7]
