*From Hell to Heaven* was [Paramount](/source/Paramount_Pictures)'s effort to replicate the success of *[Grand Hotel](/source/Grand_Hotel_(1932_film))* (1932), which had won the [Academy Award for Best Picture](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture) for [MGM](/source/MGM) the year before.[1] Reviews were favorable; [Mordaunt Hall](/source/Mordaunt_Hall) of *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)* wrote, "It is not as ambitious a picture as *Grand Hotel*, but it is interesting."[2]
