**Fritz Fliegel** (30 November 1907 – 18 July 1941) was a German [track cyclist](/source/Track_cycling), [Luftwaffe](/source/Luftwaffe) bomber pilot and recipient of the [Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross](/source/Knight's_Cross_of_the_Iron_Cross), the highest award in the military and paramilitary forces of Nazi Germany during [World War II](/source/World_War_II). On 18 July 1941, Fiegel was [killed in action](/source/Killed_in_action) flying a [Focke-Wulf Fw 200](/source/Focke-Wulf_Fw_200) during the [Atlantic War](/source/Atlantic_War) in an attack on convoy OB 346. He targeted the 7,046-ton freighter *Pilar de Larrinaga*. However, the gunners shot his starboard wing off and he crashed into the sea, killing all on board.

## Early life and career

Fliegel was born on 30 November 1907 in [Wilmersdorf](/source/Wilmersdorf), a borough of [Berlin](/source/Berlin), in the [Kingdom of Prussia](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia).[1] He was the son of the son of geographer [Gotthard Fliegel](/source/Gotthard_Fliegel) and his wife Anna Marie, née Meyer.[2] Fliegel, who had three sisters, won his first bicycle race in 1926. In 1929, he won the German [amateur](/source/Amateur) [sprint](/source/Sprint_(track_cycling)) championship at the [velodrome](/source/Velodrome) in [Stettin-Westend](/source/Szczecin). That year, he also participated in the [UCI Track Cycling World Championships](/source/1929_UCI_Track_Cycling_World_Championships) held in [Zürich](/source/Z%C3%BCrich), Switzerland where he lost in the knockout stage to the Austrian [August Schaffer](/source/August_Schaffer).[3]

Fliegel joined the military service in 1934 and transferred from the infantry of the *[Reichsheer](/source/Reichswehr)* (Army) to the newly emerging [Luftwaffe](/source/Luftwaffe) (Air Force) of [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) a year later.[4] Following his flight training, he served as [flight instructor](/source/Flight_instructor) at the pilot schools A/B 42 in [Salzwedel](/source/Salzwedel) and A/B 113 in [Brno](/source/Brno).[Note 1] There he was promoted to *[Hauptmann](/source/Hauptmann)* (captain) on 1 March 1939.[1]

## World War II

World War II in Europe began on Friday, 1 September 1939, when German forces [invaded Poland](/source/Invasion_of_Poland). Fliegel flew combat missions over Poland and received the [Iron Cross](/source/Iron_Cross) 2nd Class (*Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse*) on 15 September 1939. In early May 1940 when I. *[Gruppe](/source/Organization_of_the_Luftwaffe_(1933%E2%80%931945)#Gruppe)* (1st group) of [*Kampfgeschwader* 40](/source/Kampfgeschwader_40) (KG 40—40th Bomber Wing), a unit equipped with the long-range [Focke-Wulf Fw 200 "Condor"](/source/Focke-Wulf_Fw_200_Condor) [reconnaissance](/source/Reconnaissance) and anti-shipping/maritime patrol bomber aircraft, Fliegel was transferred to the 2. *[Staffel](/source/Organization_of_the_Luftwaffe_(1933%E2%80%931945)#Staffel)* (2nd squadron) of KG 40.[Note 2] The unit initially operated against enemy shipping from airbases in Denmark. There he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class (*Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse*) on 13 May 1940.[1]

In mid-1940, I. *Gruppe* relocated to the airbase [Bordeaux-Mérignac](/source/Bordeaux-M%C3%A9rignac_Air_Base) at the [Atlantic](/source/Atlantic) coast near [Bordeaux](/source/Bordeaux) in France. In October 1940, he was appointed *[Staffelkapitän](/source/Staffelkapit%C3%A4n)* (squadron leader) of 2. *Staffel* of KG 40. Flying the Fw 200 to its maximum range, I. *Gruppe* was credited with the destruction of 39 enemy merchant ships totaling 206,000 [gross register tons](/source/Gross_register_tonnage) (GRT), further damaging 20 ships of 115,000 GRT.[1]

On 6 February 1941, [*U-37*](/source/German_submarine_U-37_(1938)) under the command of *[Kapitänleutnant](/source/Kapit%C3%A4nleutnant)* (Captain Lieutenant) [Nicolai Clausen](/source/Nicolai_Clausen), spotted convoy HG 53, 19 merchant ships escorted by [HMS *Velox*](/source/HMS_Velox_(D34)) and [*Deptford*](/source/HMS_Deptford_(U53)), heading for [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool). Clausen reported the sighting, which was relayed to KG 40 by *[Fliegerführer Atlantik](/source/Fliegerf%C3%BChrer_Atlantik)*. On 9 February, KG 40 sent five Fw 200s to attack the convoy which was spotted at 4 pm roughly 640 kilometers (400 miles; 350 nautical miles) southwest of [Lisbon](/source/Lisbon). In the attack at [35°42′N 14°38′W / 35.700°N 14.633°W / 35.700; -14.633](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Fritz_Fliegel&params=35_42_N_14_38_W_), the Fw 200's managed to sink five ships ([*Britannic*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=SS_Britannic_(1918)&action=edit&redlink=1), [*Dagmar I*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=SS_Dagmar_I&action=edit&redlink=1), [*Jura*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=SS_Jura&action=edit&redlink=1), [*Tejo*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=SS_Tejo_(1916)&action=edit&redlink=1) and [*Varna*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=SS_Varna_(1924)&action=edit&redlink=1)), and *Deptford* damaged the Fw 200 piloted by *[Oberleutnant](/source/Oberleutnant)* (First Lieutenant) Erich Adam, who managed to fly his aircraft to Spain. *U-37* sank three further ships from HG 53.[6][7][8] This achievement earned him his first mention in the *[Wehrmachtbericht](/source/Wehrmachtbericht)*, an information bulletin and element of [Nazi propaganda](/source/Propaganda_in_Nazi_Germany) issued by the headquarters of the Wehrmacht.[1][4]

Fliegel was awarded the [Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross](/source/Knight's_Cross_of_the_Iron_Cross) (*Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes*) on 25 March 1941. In mid-April 1941 he was appointed *[Gruppenkommandeur](/source/Gruppenkommandeur)* (group commander) of I. *Gruppe* of KG 40, replacing *[Major](/source/Major_(Germany))* [Edgar Petersen](/source/Edgar_Petersen). He was mentioned a second time in the *Wehrmachtbericht* on 20 June 1941 after the number of enemy shipping destroyed by his *Gruppe* increased by a further 24 ships, reaching 109 enemy ships sunk.[1][4] By early 1941 I. *Gruppe* of KG 40 had five holders of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross reflecting the success of the *Condors* in [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean) operations.[9]

### Killed in action

On 18 July 1941, Fliegel and his crew—[copilot](/source/Copilot) *[Leutnant](/source/Leutnant)* (Second Lieutenant) Wolf-Dietrich Kadelke, first radio operator *[Oberfeldwebel](/source/Oberfeldwebel)* (Staff Sergeant) Johannes Rottke, second radio operator *[Gefreiter](/source/Gefreiter)* (Airman) Karl Becker, [flight engineer](/source/Flight_engineer) *[Unteroffizier](/source/Unteroffizier)* (Sergeant) Johann Kothe and [air gunner](/source/Air_gunner) *Unteroffizier* Karl Meurer—were reported missing in action over the Atlantic in the vicinity northwest of Ireland.[1] Their Fw 200 C-3 "F8+AB" (*Werknummer* 0043—factory number) was shot down in an attack on convoy OB 346. During the attack on the freighter *Pilar de Larrinaga*, the gunners on board the freighter scored a hit on the Fw 200's starboard wing which tore it off.[10] At the time of his death, Fliegel was credited with seven ships sunk plus further six damaged. He was promoted to *[Major](/source/Major_(Germany))* (major) posthumously.[4]

## Notes

1. **[^](#cite_ref-6)** Flight training in the *Luftwaffe* progressed through the levels A1, A2 and B1, B2, referred to as A/B flight training. A training included theoretical and practical training in aerobatics, navigation, long-distance flights and dead-stick landings. The B courses included high-altitude flights, instrument flights, night landings and training to handle the aircraft in difficult situations.[5]
