# Frithsden

**Frithsden** /ˈfrɪzdən/ (locally pronounced 'Frizden') is a small [hamlet](/source/Hamlet_(place)) in [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire), England. It sits in the [Chiltern Hills](/source/Chiltern_Hills), about two miles north of the town of [Berkhamsted](/source/Berkhamsted), which it's part of. [Administratively](/source/Administrative_law), it falls under the [Dacorum](/source/Dacorum) district, specifically in the ward of [Nettleden](/source/Nettleden) with [Potten End](/source/Potten_End).

The village name is derived from the wood *le Fryth* ([me](/source/Middle_English_language). frith »wood«).[1] It is first mentioned 1291 as *Frithesdene* (»valley of the wood«).

West of the hamlet bordering to [Ashridge Park](/source/Ashridge_Park) are the **Frithsden Beeches**, a wood left to nature, with large [beeches](/source/Beech). Scenes for *[Sleepy Hollow](/source/Sleepy_Hollow_(film))*, *[Jonathan Creek](/source/Jonathan_Creek)* and *[Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire](/source/Harry_Potter_and_the_Goblet_of_Fire_(film))* have been filmed in this wood.[2]

Frithsden, together with the neighbouring hamlets [Nettleden](/source/Nettleden) and Potten End, is famous for its black cherries and the villagers hold in July their annual cherry fair. They also claim to have originated the [Cherry Bounce](/source/Cherry_bounce) and the Cherry Turnover.[3] The village also had a winery, Frithsden Vineyard, but this closed in 2019.
