Location of Frise in France (1812)

Frise within the northern French Empire (1811)

**Frise** (French: [\[fʁiz\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French)) was a [department](/source/Departments_of_France) of the [First French Empire](/source/First_French_Empire) in the present-day [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands). It was formed in 1811, after the [Kingdom of Holland](/source/Kingdom_of_Holland) was annexed by France. It was named after [Friesland](/source/Friesland): "Frise" [\[fʁiz\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French) in French. It was the successor of the [Friesland Department](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Friesland_Department&action=edit&redlink=1), which was formed in 1802. Its territory roughly corresponded with the present-day Dutch province of [Friesland](/source/Friesland).

Its capital was [Leeuwarden](/source/Leeuwarden). The department was subdivided into the following [arrondissements](/source/Arrondissement) and [cantons](/source/Canton_(administrative_division)) (situation in 1812):[1]

- [Leeuwarden](/source/Leeuwarden), cantons: [Bergum](/source/Burgum), [Buitenpost](/source/Buitenpost), [Dokkum](/source/Dokkum), [Dronrijp](/source/Dronrijp), [Franeker](/source/Franeker), [Hallum](/source/Hallum), [Harlingen](/source/Harlingen%2C_Netherlands), [Holwerd](/source/Holwerd) and [Leeuwarden](/source/Leeuwarden) (2 cantons).

- [Heerenveen](/source/Heerenveen), cantons: [Akkrum](/source/Akkrum), [Beetsterzwaag](/source/Beetsterzwaag), [Heerenveen](/source/Heerenveen) and [Oldeberkoop](/source/Oldeberkoop).

- [Sneek](/source/Sneek), cantons: [Bolsward](/source/Bolsward), [Hindeloopen](/source/Hindeloopen), [Lemmer](/source/Lemmer), [Rauwerd](/source/Raerd) and [Sneek](/source/Sneek).

Its population in 1812 was 175,400, and its area was 279,835 hectares.[1]

After [Napoleon](/source/Napoleon) was defeated in 1813, the department became part of the [United Kingdom of the Netherlands](/source/United_Kingdom_of_the_Netherlands).
