# Friedrich Issak

**Friedrich Issak** (20 November 1915, [Petrograd](/source/Saint_Petersburg) – 11 May 1991)[1] was an [Estonian](/source/Estonia) [sportsman](/source/Sportsperson) and [journalist](/source/Journalist). As a [javelin thrower](/source/Javelin_throw), he won gold and bronze medals at the [International University Games](/source/International_University_Games) and was national champion of [Estonia](/source/Estonia) and later the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union). In addition, he played [basketball](/source/Basketball) and [volleyball](/source/Volleyball), winning national championship medals in both. He later became [editor-in-chief](/source/Editor-in-chief) of the culture magazine *[Kultuur ja Elu](/source/Kultuur_ja_Elu)*.

## Sports career

At the [1937 International University Games](/source/1937_International_University_Games) in [Paris](/source/Paris) Issak won gold in the javelin with a throw of 70.25 m, a meeting record that was only broken twenty years later.[1][2] His best throw that year, 70.56 m, placed him sixth on the annual world list.[1][3] Issak placed fifth at the [1938 European Championships](/source/1938_European_Athletics_Championships), also in Paris, and recorded his personal best (72.07 m) in [Tartu](/source/Tartu) in July 1939.[3][4] At that year's [International University Games](/source/1939_International_University_Games_(unofficial)) in [Vienna](/source/Vienna) he won the bronze medal with 66.79 m.[2]

He was [Estonian champion](/source/Estonian_Athletics_Championships) in the javelin in 1940, 1946 and 1947 and [Soviet champion](/source/Soviet_Athletics_Championships) in 1943, 1944 and 1947.[1] Additionally, he was [Estonian basketball champion](/source/Korvpalli_Meistriliiga) three times from 1938 to 1940 with Tartu EASK.[1] He also won [national championship medals in volleyball](/source/Estonian_Volleyball_Championships).[1]

## Outside sports

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II) Issak served in the [Red Army](/source/Red_Army)[1] and the [destruction battalions](/source/Destruction_battalions).[5] In 1944 he became editor of the sports magazine *Kehakultuur*, a post he held until 1951.[1] From 1958 to 1978 he worked for the culture magazine *Kultuur ja Elu*, eventually becoming its editor-in-chief.[1] His [memoir](/source/Memoir) *Nood rohtunud rajad* was published in 1988.[1]
