**Friars Cliff** is a neighborhood and beach in [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch%2C_Dorset), [Dorset](/source/Dorset).[1] It is east of [Mudeford](/source/Mudeford) and west of [Highcliffe](/source/Highcliffe).

## History

The area was once an isolated rural hamlet called **Bure**.[2] A place called "Beora" is recorded early in the 12th century as being granted to [Christchurch Priory](/source/Christchurch_Priory).[2] An estate map of 1796 depicts the hamlet of Bure as comprising two clusters of houses on either bank of Bure Brook and facing on to a village green.[2] In the 19th century, the land to the west was enclosed for the creation of a country house and its associated grounds known as Bure Homage, whereas to the east lay Bure Farm.[2] The settlement of Friars Cliff was developed from fields in the first half of the 20th century.[2]

## Beach

**Friars Cliff Beach** is in the south of [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch%2C_Dorset), and sits on the edge of the [English Channel](/source/English_Channel).[3]

## Politics

Friars Cliff is part of the [Christchurch parliamentary constituency](/source/Christchurch_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) for elections to the [House of Commons](/source/House_of_Commons_of_the_United_Kingdom). It is currently represented by [Conservative](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) [MP](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) [Christopher Chope](/source/Christopher_Chope).

Friars Cliff is also part of the [Mudeford, Stanpit and West Highcliffe wards](/source/Mudeford%2C_Stanpit_and_West_Highcliffe_(ward)) for elections to [Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council](/source/Bournemouth%2C_Christchurch_and_Poole_Council).

Since 2019, Friars Cliff has elected two councillors to Christchurch Town Council.[4]
