**Freirina** is a [Chilean](/source/Chile) [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile) and [town](/source/List_of_towns_in_Chile) in [Huasco Province](/source/Huasco_Province), [Atacama Region](/source/Atacama_Region). The commune spans an area of 3,577.7 km2 (1,381 sq mi).[2] Freirina is both an agricultural and a mining town.

Prior to the founding of Vallenar in 1789 Freirina, then known as Santa Rosa, was the main town of [Huasco Valley](/source/Huasco_Valley).[5] The town was renamed to Freirina in honor of [Supreme Director](/source/Supreme_Director_of_Chile) [Ramón Freire](/source/Ram%C3%B3n_Freire) in 1824 when it was raised in settlement category from *asiento* a *villa*.[5]

From the 1930s to the 1950s there was significant [gold mining](/source/Gold_mining_in_Chile) in [Capote](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Capote,_Chile&action=edit&redlink=1) 25 km north of Freirina.[6] For much of the 19th centuiry and then again from 1952 to 1973 [El Morado](/source/El_Morado), 40 km south of Freirina, was an important copper mining center.[7][8]

## Demographics

According to the 2002 [census](/source/Census) by the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), Freirina had 5,666 inhabitants; of these, 3,469 (61.2%) lived in [urban areas](/source/Urban_area) and 2,107 (38.8%) in [rural areas](/source/Rural_area). At that time, there were 2,800 men and 2,866 women. The population grew by 8.5% (445 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[2]

## Administration

As a commune, Freirina is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council), headed by an [alcalde](/source/Alcalde) who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Roberto Bruzzone Galeb.

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/Electoral_divisions_of_Chile), Freirina is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by Mr. Alberto Robles ([PRSD](/source/Social_Democrat_Radical_Party)) and Mr. Giovanni Calderón ([UDI](/source/Independent_Democratic_Union)) as part of the 6th electoral district, (together with [Caldera](/source/Caldera%2C_Chile), [Tierra Amarilla](/source/Tierra_Amarilla%2C_Chile), [Vallenar](/source/Vallenar), [Huasco](/source/Huasco%2C_Chile) and [Alto del Carmen](/source/Alto_del_Carmen)). The commune is represented in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Chile) by Isabel Allende Bussi ([PS](/source/Socialist_Party_of_Chile)) and Baldo Prokurica Prokurica ([RN](/source/National_Renewal_(Chile))) as part of the 3rd senatorial constituency (Atacama Region).
