== History ==
The '''Freedom of Intellect Movement''' began with the formation of the ‘[Muslim Sahitya Samaj](/source/Muslim_Sahitya-Samaj)’ (Muslim Literary Society) in 1926. Its primary goal was to eliminate religious [dogma](/source/dogma), [ignorance](/source/ignorance), and [superstitions](/source/Superstition) from society and promote [rational](/source/Rationality) and [secular](/source/Secularity) thinking. Notable members of the movement included [Kazi Abdul Wadud](/source/Kazi_Abdul_Wadud), [Abul Fazl](/source/Abul_Fazal_(writer)), [Muhammad Shahidullah](/source/Muhammad_Shahidullah), [Qazi Motahar Hossain](/source/Qazi_Motahar_Hossain), [Kazi Nazrul Islam](/source/Kazi_Nazrul_Islam), and [Abdul Quadir](/source/Abdul_Quadir).<ref name=":1">{{Cite web|last=Abul Kashem|first=Fazlul Haq|date=2024-10-03|title=Freedom of Intellect Movement Still Relevant Today|url=https://www.kalerkantho.com/online/miscellaneous/2024/10/01/1430705|access-date=2024-10-03|website=Kaler Kantho}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|last=Azadi|first=Dainik|date=2021-05-18|language=en-US|title=Kazi Abdul Wadud: Pioneer of Free Thinking and Cultural Liberation|url=https://dainikazadi.net/%E0%A6%95%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%9C%E0%A7%80-%E0%A6%86%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%B2-%E0%A6%93%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%A6-%E0%A6%AE%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%AC%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%A6-4/|access-date=2024-10-03|website=Dainik Azadi}}</ref><ref name=":2" />

At the beginning of the 20th century, the [Bengali Muslim](/source/Bengali_Muslims) community harbored [resentment](/source/resentment) toward [British rule](/source/British_Raj) and distanced itself from [modern](/source/Modernity) knowledge and [science](/source/science). Due to this antagonism, the Muslim society fell behind in [education](/source/education), [economics](/source/economics), and social [progress](/source/progress). On the contrary, the [Hindu](/source/Hindus) community accepted British rule and progressed through modern education. The Freedom of Intellect Movement aimed to change this situation in society.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" />

The movement was spearheaded by the [Muslim Sahitya Samaj](/source/Muslim_Sahitya-Samaj), founded on 19 January 1926 at [Muslim Hall](/source/Salimullah_Muslim_Hall) in [Dhaka University](/source/Dhaka_University), under the leadership of Professor Dr. [Muhammad Shahidullah](/source/Muhammad_Shahidullah) of the Bengali and Cultural Department. Other key leaders included Abul Hussain, [Kazi Abdul Wadud](/source/Kazi_Abdul_Wadud), [Qazi Motahar Hossain](/source/Qazi_Motahar_Hossain), [Motaher Hossain Chowdhury](/source/Motaher_Hussain_Chowdhury), [Abdul Quadir](/source/Abdul_Quadir), and several other [intellectuals](/source/Intellectual).<ref name=":0">{{Cite news|url=https://www.ajkerpatrika.com/295098/%E0%A6%AC%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A7%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%B0-%E0%A6%AE%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%BF-%E0%A6%86%E0%A6%A8%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%B2%E0%A6%A8%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B0-%E0%A6%86%E0%A6%B2%E0%A7%8B-%E0%A6%95%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%81-%E0%A6%9B%E0%A7%9C%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%B2|title=How Much Did the Light of the Freedom of Intellect Movement Spread?|last=Abdul Alim|first=Dr. M.|date=3 October 2023|work=Ajker Patrika|access-date=3 October 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241003090038/https://www.ajkerpatrika.com/web/20241003090038/https://www.ajkerpatrika.com/295098/%E0%A6%AC%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A7%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%B0-%E0%A6%AE%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%BF-%E0%A6%86%E0%A6%A8%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%B2%E0%A6%A8%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B0-%E0%A6%86%E0%A6%B2%E0%A7%8B-%E0%A6%95%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%9F%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%81-%E0%A6%9B%E0%A7%9C%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%B2|archive-date=3 October 2024|url-status=live|language=Bangla}}</ref><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":3" />

== Objectives and programs ==
The Freedom of Intellect Movement was founded on the principles of [rationalism](/source/rationalism), [secularism](/source/secularism), and [humanism](/source/humanism). The movement's primary goal was to lead an [intellectual](/source/Intellect) and [literary](/source/Literature) drive that opposed blind [superstition](/source/superstition), religious [dogma](/source/dogma), and [backwardness](/source/backwardness) in [Bengali Muslim](/source/Bengali_Muslims) society, while promoting rationalism, humanity, and [scientific](/source/Science) thinking.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" />

At the second annual conference of the ‘[Muslim Sahitya Samaj](/source/Muslim_Sahitya-Samaj),’ it was declared, "We want to open our eyes and truly experience life, and we want to burn away the [superstitions](/source/Superstition)." The movement aimed to address the crisis of [self-identity](/source/Self-concept) within the Muslim community and promote scientific thinking and humanism.<ref name=":1" />

In 1929, after the publication of Abul Hussain’s article ‘Adesh-er Nigraha’ (Suppression of Commandments), there was a strong backlash from conservative circles in [Dhaka](/source/Dhaka). This event forced Abul Hussain to issue an apology, which became a significant episode in the movement. Though he later resigned, this event did not halt the movement's progress.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":2" />

== Impact ==
The Freedom of Intellect Movement initiated a [renaissance](/source/Bengal_Renaissance) in the [Bengali Muslim](/source/Bengali_Muslims) society. Although it did not directly oppose religion, it strongly voiced against the [conservatism](/source/conservatism) and [superstitions](/source/Superstition) in society. This movement inspired a new wave of [thought](/source/thought) within Bengali Muslim society.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" />

The movement continued its activities until 1936, spreading its ideas through the ‘Shikha’ magazine. Though the movement’s influence eventually waned, its teachings and [ideals](/source/Ideal_(ethics)) remain foundational to the [progressive](/source/Progressivism) values of Bengali society today.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":2" />
