His nine-year collaboration with Raitt (1971–1979) began when he attracted Raitt's attention as a member of Philadelphia's [Edison Electric Band](/source/Edison_Electric_Band)<ref>{{AllMusic|class=artist|id=mn0001560722|tab=biography|label=Edison Electric|first=Richie|last=Unterberger|accessdate=4 July 2016}}</ref> in the late 1960s.  He played several instruments with Raitt, including electric bass, fretless bass, and tuba.
