This article is about the English band. For the discography of the anime series [Free!](/source/Free!), see [Free! discography](/source/Free!_discography). For discographies of various other Free, see their articles, see [Free (disambiguation)](/source/Free_(disambiguation)).

[Free](/source/Free_(band)) was an English [rock](/source/Rock_music) band formed in [London](/source/London) in 1968 by singer [Paul Rodgers](/source/Paul_Rodgers), guitarist [Paul Kossoff](/source/Paul_Kossoff), bassist [Andy Fraser](/source/Andy_Fraser) and drummer [Simon Kirke](/source/Simon_Kirke). Signed with [Island Records](/source/Island_Records), the group are known for their hit songs "[All Right Now](/source/All_Right_Now)” and "[Wishing Well](/source/Wishing_Well_(Free_song))". Free's discography consists of six [studio albums](/source/Album), two [live albums](/source/Live_album), 18 [compilation albums](/source/Compilation_album), one [EP](/source/Extended_play), 16 [singles](/source/Single_(music)) and two [video albums](/source/Video). The band released their debut album *[Tons of Sobs](/source/Tons_of_Sobs)* in 1969.[1] The album entered the US [*Billboard* 200](/source/Billboard_200) chart at number 197.[2] Free's [self-titled second album](/source/Free_(Free_album)) failed in sales and charts, before the 1970 follow-up *[Fire and Water](/source/Fire_and_Water_(Free_album))* peaked at number 2 on the [UK Albums Chart](/source/UK_Albums_Chart),[3] supported by the popular single "[All Right Now](/source/All_Right_Now)" which reached the same position on the [UK Singles Chart](/source/UK_Singles_Chart).[4] The single also reached the top ten in a number of other regions, including the United States where it peaked at number 4 on the [*Billboard* Hot 100](/source/Billboard_Hot_100).[5]

Free's fourth album *[Highway](/source/Highway_(Free_album))* reached number 41 on the UK Albums Chart,[3] while its lead single "Stealer" charted at number 49 on the *Billboard* Hot 100.[5] Free broke up in 1971 due to tensions between members of the band.[1] In September, the group's first live album *[Free Live!](/source/Free_Live!)* was released, reaching number 4 on the UK Albums Chart and number 89 on the *Billboard* 200.[3][6] The non-album single "[My Brother Jake](/source/My_Brother_Jake)", released the same year, peaked at number 4 in the UK.[4] Free reunited the following year, releasing *[Free at Last](/source/Free_at_Last_(Free_album))* in June 1972 which reached the top ten of the UK Albums Chart.[3] In early 1973 the band released *[Heartbreaker](/source/Heartbreaker_(Free_album))*, which was recorded primarily by Rodgers and Kirke due to Fraser's departure and Kossoff's drug problems.[1]

The band broke up permanently later in 1973, with Rodgers and Kirke going on to form [Bad Company](/source/Bad_Company) later that year.[1] Island issued the first Free compilation at the end of the year, *[The Free Story](/source/The_Free_Story)*, which reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified silver by the [British Phonographic Industry](/source/British_Phonographic_Industry) (BPI).[3][7] Many more compilations followed in the subsequent years, including *[The Best of Free: All Right Now](/source/The_Best_of_Free:_All_Right_Now)* in 1991, which reached the top ten in the UK, and *[Chronicles](/source/Chronicles_(Free_album))* in 2005, which reached number 42 on the chart.[3] *The Very Best of Free & Bad Company Featuring Paul Rodgers*, released in 2010, which also features tracks by Bad Company, peaked at number 10 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified silver by the BPI.[3][7] The band reached the top ten on the UK Singles Chart again in 1991, with a remixed version of "All Right Now" which peaked at number 8.[4]
