He made his stage debut in his early twenties. From 1894 until his death he was a familiar figure on the [West End](/source/West_End_theatre) stage, generally in undemanding comedies and other ephemeral productions. Among others, he created the role of Alexis in ''[The Girl in the Taxi](/source/The_Girl_in_the_Taxi)'' (1913). He made several films, beginning in 1917.

==Life and career==
Volpe was born in [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool), the son of Raffaele Volpe.<ref name=who/> He was educated at the [Liverpool Institute High School for Boys](/source/Liverpool_Institute_High_School_for_Boys) (now the [Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts](/source/Liverpool_Institute_for_Performing_Arts)), and made his stage debut in 1887 at [Rhyl](/source/Rhyl) in north Wales.<ref name=who/> He first came to public prominence in 1894 when he appeared in ''The Gentleman Whip'' at [Terry's Theatre](/source/Terry's_Theatre), London, under the management of [Weedon Grossmith](/source/Weedon_Grossmith).<ref name=who/> He remained a member of Grossmith's team for more than two years, appearing in ''The New Boy'', ''The Ladies' Idol'', ''Poor Mr. Potton'' and ''The Romance of the Shopwalker''. For the rest of the century he played in light comedies and other ephemeral productions in the [West End](/source/West_End_theatre).<ref name=who/> In 1900 he visited America with [E. S. Willard](/source/Edward_Smith_Willard)'s company.<ref name=who/>

Between the turn of the century and the First World War, Volpe's roles included Pecksniff in ''Tom Pinch'', based on ''[Martin Chuzzlewit](/source/Martin_Chuzzlewit)'' (1903), Lord Amersteth in a play based on the ''[Raffles](/source/A._J._Raffles)'' stories (1906), Paul Bultitude in a stage version of ''[Vice Versa](/source/Vice_Versa_(novel))'', and Alexis in ''[The Girl in the Taxi](/source/The_Girl_in_the_Taxi)'' (1913).<ref name=who/> Among his post-war roles were Chancellor Teppich in ''[The Prisoner of Zenda](/source/The_Prisoner_of_Zenda)'' (1923), Mr Cattermole in ''[The Private Secretary](/source/The_Private_Secretary_(play))'' (1923)<ref name=who>Parker, pp. 951–952</ref> and Sir Joshua Grimshaw in ''The Truth Game'' in a starry cast including [Lily Elsie](/source/Lily_Elsie), [Ivor Novello](/source/Ivor_Novello), [Lilian Braithwaite](/source/Lilian_Braithwaite), [Viola Tree](/source/Viola_Tree) and [Glen Byam Shaw](/source/Glen_Byam_Shaw) (1928).<ref>"Globe Theatre", ''The Times'', 6 October 1920, p. 10</ref>
