Born in [St. John's](/source/St._John's%2C_Newfoundland_and_Labrador), he studied at [Dalhousie University](/source/Dalhousie_University) and the Atlantic School for Advanced Business Administration. He was a fighter pilot with the [Royal Canadian Air Force](/source/Royal_Canadian_Air_Force) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) in which he flew the [de Havilland Mosquito](/source/de_Havilland_Mosquito). He was president of Blue Peter Steamships 1949-1972. He was President of Terra Nova Motors Ltd. 1962-1979
He was a member of the Newfoundland Labour Relations Board for over 35 years.
