Farrell was born in 1882 to John Farrell and Margaret Lawson Farrell.<ref name="GL">{{cite web|url=http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/museums/peoples-palace/exhibitions/past-exhibitions/fredafarrell/pages/default.aspx|title=Fred A. Farrell: Glasgow's War Artist|year=2014|work=Glasgow Life|access-date=9 May 2015}}</ref> His father was a school board officer at the time of his birth and later curator at the Trades House in Glasgow.

Farrell trained as a [civil engineer](/source/civil_engineer) while apprenticed to his brother.<ref name="HS" /> As an artist, he was self-taught,<ref name="BBC-27604300" /> and worked in [watercolour](/source/watercolour), as well as making [etching](/source/etching)s.<ref name="HS" />

He was enlisted into the army as a [sapper](/source/sapper) in June 1916, but was discharged six months later after developing a [gastric ulcer](/source/gastric_ulcer).<ref name="HS" />

Following his appointment as a war artist, he went to [Flanders](/source/Flanders), Belgium, in November 1917, and spent three weeks there, painting [Highland Light Infantry](/source/Highland_Light_Infantry) battalions.<ref name="HS" /> The next year he drew the   [51st (Highland) Division](/source/51st_(Highland)_Division) in France.<ref name="HS" />

He died in 1935 of pneumonia.<ref name="GL" />

An exhibition of his work, the first since 1920,<ref name="HS" /> ''Fred A. Farrell: Glasgow's War Artist'', was held at [The People's Palace](/source/People's_Palace%2C_Glasgow), Glasgow in 2014.<ref name="HS" />
