# Frederick Condit

**Frederick T. Condit** (March 27, 1852 – January 1933) was an American lawyer from [Merrillan](/source/Merrillan,_Wisconsin), [Wisconsin](/source/Wisconsin) who served one term as an [Independent](/source/Independent_(politics)) [Greenback](/source/Greenback_Party) member of the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly) from [Jackson County](/source/Jackson_County,_Wisconsin).[1]

## Background

Condit was born in the village of [Dresden](/source/Dresden,_Yates_County,_New_York), [Yates County](/source/Yates_County,_New_York), [New York](/source/New_York_(state)), on March 27, 1852; he came to Wisconsin with his family in 1857, and they settled at [Sparta](/source/Sparta,_Wisconsin). Condit received a [common school](/source/State_school) education, and became a lawyer. He moved to [Merrillan](/source/Merrillan,_Wisconsin) in Jackson County in 1877.

## Public office

In 1877 he ran as a [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) for [district attorney](/source/District_attorney), but lost. He was elected as an "Independent Greenback" in 1878 with 833 votes to 811 for Republican J. R. Sechler ([Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) incumbent [Carl C. Pope](/source/Carl_C._Pope) was not a candidate for re-election). He was appointed to the [standing committees](/source/Standing_committee) on [federal relations](/source/State-federal_relations) and on [privileges](/source/Privileges_(legal_ethics)) and [elections](/source/Elections); and to the [joint committee](/source/Joint_committee_(legislative)) on [claims](/source/Claim_(legal)).[2]

In 1879 he ran as a Democrat for the [State Senate](/source/Wisconsin_State_Senate)'s [32nd District](/source/Wisconsin_Senate,_District_32) (Jackson and Monroe counties), losing to [William T. Price](/source/William_T._Price), with 3,425 votes to Price's 4,395. He was succeeded in the Assembly by Republican [Robert D. Wilson](/source/Robert_D._Wilson).[3]

## Outside the Assembly

Condit married Elsie Woodley on January 13, 1879. Sometime after leaving the legislature, he moved to [Hudson](/source/Hudson,_Wisconsin) in [St. Croix County](/source/St._Croix_County,_Wisconsin),[4] where he became the Mayor of Hudson and was editor and manager of the *[Hudson Star-Observer](/source/Hudson_Star-Observer)*. He died in Hudson.[4][5]
