'''Frederic Tobin''' (5 July 1849 – 28 September 1914) was an English [clergyman](/source/clergyman) and [cricketer](/source/cricketer) who played [first-class cricket](/source/first-class_cricket) for [Marylebone Cricket Club](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) (MCC) and [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) between 1870 and 1872.<ref name="ca">{{cite web | url = https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/33/33349/33349.html| title = Frederic Tobin | publisher = www.cricketarchive.com |url-access=subscription | access-date = 17 June 2017}}</ref> He was born at [Liscard](/source/Liscard), [Wallasey](/source/Wallasey), then in [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire) and died at [Folkestone](/source/Folkestone), [Kent](/source/Kent).

The son of the vicar of Liscard, whose forebears were the builders of Liscard Hall, Tobin was educated at [Rugby School](/source/Rugby_School) and [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge).<ref name="venn">{{cite web | url = https://archive.org/stream/p2alumnicantabri06univuoft#page/196/mode/2up | title = Alumni Cantabrigienses: Frederic Tobin| author = J. Venn and J. A. Venn | volume = Part 6| page = 197 | access-date = 18 June 2017}}</ref> As a cricketer, he was a right-handed batsman often used as an opener.<ref name="ca"/> His first first-class game in 1870 was an appearance for MCC ''against'' Cambridge University: a common practice at the time to try out new players for the university sides. In the return game, he was Cambridge's top scorer with 33 in the first innings, and that was sufficient to put him into the [1870 University Match](/source/University_Match_(cricket)) against [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club), where he scored 13 and 2 in a game which ended sensationally with a Cambridge victory by just two runs, and which has become known as "[Cobden's Match](/source/Cobden's_Match)" after the bowler who secured the victory.<ref>{{cite web | url = https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/1/1636.html| title = Scorecard: Oxford University v Cambridge University | date = 20 June 1870 | publisher = www.cricketarchive.com |url-access=subscription | access-date = 23 June 2017}}</ref> In 1871, he scored his first half-century, with 63 in the game against the Gentlemen of England team, and was again selected for the University Match.<ref>{{cite web | url = https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/1/1686.html| title = Scorecard: Cambridge University v Gentlemen of England | date = 1 June 1871 | publisher = www.cricketarchive.com |url-access=subscription | access-date = 23 June 2017}}</ref> His highest first-class score was 77, made against [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club) in 1872, when he was again awarded a [Blue](/source/Blue_(university_sport)) by appearing in the University Match.<ref>{{cite web | url = https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/1/1749.html| title = Scorecard: Surrey v Cambridge University | date = 13 June 1872 | publisher = www.cricketarchive.com |url-access=subscription | access-date = 23 June 2017}}</ref> After the 1872 University Match, Tobin did not appear in any further first-class cricket, though he played a couple of minor matches in 1885 for [Warwickshire](/source/Warwickshire_County_Cricket_Club), not then a first-class team.<ref name="ca"/>

Tobin graduated from [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University) with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in 1872, and this was automatically converted to a [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts) in 1875.<ref name="venn"/> He was ordained as a [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England) [deacon](/source/deacon) in 1873 and as a priest the following year.<ref name="venn"/> He served as a curate at [Croydon](/source/Croydon) to 1875 and then at [Caversham, Berkshire](/source/Caversham%2C_Berkshire).<ref name="venn"/> He became vicar of [Charlecote](/source/Charlecote_Park), [Warwickshire](/source/Warwickshire) in 1884 and remained there until his death in 1914.<ref name="venn"/>
