# Fred Lindop

**George Frederick Lindop** [MBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) (20 July 1938 – January 2023) was a British [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) [referee](/source/Rugby_league_match_officials#Referee). He refereed 22 test matches, including the [World Cup final in 1970](/source/1970_Rugby_League_World_Cup_final). He also refereed five [Challenge Cup Finals](/source/Challenge_Cup_Final).

Lindop was appointed [Member of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Member_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (MBE) in the [1989 New Year Honours](/source/1989_New_Year_Honours) for services to rugby league,[2] and was inducted to the [Rugby Football League](/source/Rugby_Football_League)'s Roll of Honour in 2009.[3][4]

Lindop also established the [University of Sheffield](/source/University_of_Sheffield) rugby league team in 1969 and coached them.[5] He coached junior rugby league at the Eastmoor club in Wakefield and the [Oulton Raiders](/source/Oulton_Raiders) club near [Leeds](/source/Leeds).

His death was announced on 23 January 2023, at the age of 84.[6]
