# Fred Hopkinson

**Fred Hopkinson** (26 April 1908 – 1986) was an English [footballer](/source/Association_football) who made 221 appearances in the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) playing as a [wing half](/source/Wing_half) or [inside right](/source/Inside_right) for [Darlington](/source/Darlington_F.C.) and [Barrow](/source/Barrow_A.F.C.) in the 1920s and 1930s. He was also on the books of [Sheffield Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.), but without representing that club in league competition, and played [non-league football](/source/Non-league_football) for [Shotton](/source/Shotton_F.C.), [Seaham Harbour](/source/Seaham_Harbour_F.C.), [Horden Colliery Welfare](/source/Horden_Colliery_Welfare)[4] and [South Shields](/source/South_Shields_F.C._(1936)).[5]

In 1933, Hopkinson and Darlington teammates [Harry Brown](/source/Harry_Brown_(footballer,_born_1907)), [Billy Eden](/source/Billy_Eden) and [Tom Halliday](/source/Tom_Halliday) were members of the Rest of Durham XI that faced [First Division](/source/Football_League_First_Division) club [Sunderland](/source/Sunderland_A.F.C.) in a match to celebrate the silver jubilee of the [Durham County Football Association](/source/Durham_County_Football_Association).[6]

Hopkinson was born in [Royton](/source/Royton), [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire),[4] the son of Samuel Hopkinson, a [piecer](/source/Spinning_mule), and his wife Martha.[1]
