It was based on the 1874 novel *[Fromont and Risler](/source/Fromont_and_Risler)* by [Alphonse Daudet](/source/Alphonse_Daudet). The film was Jannings' first starring role, his previous appearance having been as an [extra](/source/Extra_(actor)) in *[Im Schützengraben](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Im_Sch%C3%BCtzengraben&action=edit&redlink=1)*.[1]

## Plot

An ambitious wife spends all of her husband's hard-earned money and then commits suicide out of remorse.[2]
