{{Use dmy dates|date=April 2022}}
'''Frating Abbey''' was reputedly an abbey in the village of [Frating](/source/Frating), in [Essex](/source/Essex), England.<ref>{{Cite web|title=FRATING ABBEY FARMHOUSE, Thorrington - 1265151 {{!}} Historic England|url=https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1265151|access-date=2020-07-11|website=historicengland.org.uk|language=en}}</ref> There is no evidence however that there was more than a farm here belonging to either [St Botolph's Priory](/source/St_Botolph's_Priory), [Colchester](/source/Colchester), founded c. 1093, or to [Wix Priory](/source/Wix_Priory), founded c. 1125.

The current house, the first to be named Frating Abbey Farmhouse, built by a Mr Boghurst, dates from the mid-nineteenth century.<ref>''Essex Standard'', Saturday 16 October 1886</ref> It replaced a [manor house](/source/manor_house) called Wheelers, mentioned twice in the Essex [feet of fines](/source/feet_of_fines) in 1547.<ref>Feet of Fines CP25(2)/57/418 EASTER, 1 EDWARD VI (1547) 21 - [Richard](/source/Richard_Taverner), Robert and Roger Tavernor purchased the property from R. Gurdon</ref> and 1564.<ref>Feet of Fines CP26{1)/124 {1564) 56 Mich. - William Watson purchased the property from William Wilford, esquire, and his wife Agnes</ref> Deeds for the [manor of Kirby Hall](/source/Kirby_Hall%2C_Essex) in 1814 included the manor of Wheelers with mansion and 200 acres in [Great Bentley](/source/Great_Bentley), Frating and [Thorrington](/source/Thorrington).<ref>Essex Record Office D/DHt T439</ref> The first edition of the [Ordnance Survey](/source/Ordnance_Survey) map showed the location as Wheelers from 1805. The Ordnance Survey map of 1878 however shows the site as 'Frating Abbey on the site of [Gothic script] Frating Abbey'. The parish boundaries of Great Bentley and
Thorrington, as well as the parliamentary boundaries of Clacton-on-Sea and North Essex and Harwich, pass through the house.

The first mention of Frating Abbey as an address is from 1853 in a letter written to the editor of the ''Essex Standard and General Advertiser''.<ref>''Essex Standard'', Friday 23 December 1853</ref>
