# Fraser Gallery

**The Fraser Gallery** was either of two [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington,_D.C.) (1996-2011) or [Bethesda, Maryland](/source/Bethesda,_Maryland) (2002-2011) [art galleries](/source/Art_gallery) founded by [Catriona Fraser](/source/Catriona_Fraser),[1] an [expatriate](/source/Expatriate) [British](/source/British_people) photographer and art dealer in Washington.[2]

## History

Fraser opened the Fraser Gallery in 1996 in the [Georgetown](/source/Georgetown_(Washington,_D.C.)) neighborhood of Washington.[2] In 2002 she opened a second gallery in [Bethesda](/source/Bethesda,_Maryland),[3][4] a [Maryland](/source/Maryland) suburb of the [Greater Washington](/source/Greater_Washington) area. She also founded Secondsight,[5][6][7] an organization of women photographers. The galleries closed in 2011.[8]

The Fraser Gallery represented several significant [artists](/source/Artist) during its operating years, including [Tim Tate](/source/Tim_Tate_(artist)),[9][10] [David FeBland](/source/David_FeBland),[11] [Kris Kuksi](/source/Kris_Kuksi),[12] [Chawky Frenn](/source/Chawky_Frenn),[13][14] [Joyce Tenneson](/source/Joyce_Tenneson),[15][16] [Lida Moser](/source/Lida_Moser),[17][18][19] [F. Lennox Campello](/source/F._Lennox_Campello),[20] [Michael Janis](/source/Michael_Janis),[21] [Dianora Niccolini](/source/Dianora_Niccolini),[22][23] [Maxwell MacKenzie](/source/Maxwell_MacKenzie),[24][25][26] [Nestor Hernández](/source/Nestor_Hern%C3%A1ndez),[27] [Mark Jenkins](/source/Mark_Jenkins_(artist)),[28][29] as well as many key contemporary [Cuban](/source/Cubans) artists such as [Sandra Ramos](/source/Sandra_Ramos),[27][30][31] [Marta María Pérez Bravo](/source/Marta_Mar%C3%ADa_P%C3%A9rez_Bravo),[32] and others.[32][33][34]

*[The Washington Post](/source/The_Washington_Post)* noted in 2000 that the gallery was able to take advantage of the then emerging [Internet](/source/Internet) to stage art shows which "draws entries from all over the world",[35] and a few years earlier, in 1998, praised the gallery for having "one of the liveliest, best-looking and best-organized sites in town",[36] in a seminal article about art galleries' websites in Washington, DC.[36] Upon the announcement of its closing, a *[Washington City Paper](/source/Washington_City_Paper)* photography critic wrote that "the gallery mounted significant shows by such photographers as [Maxwell MacKenzie](/source/Maxwell_MacKenzie) and [Lida Moser](/source/Lida_Moser), as well as an annual photography contest".[37]

Fraser is now the Chair of the Trawick Art Prize,[38][39] an art competition for [Maryland](/source/Maryland), [Virginia](/source/Virginia) and D.C. artists which awards $14,000 in prize money.[38] She is also the director of the annual Bethesda Fine Arts Festival.[38][40]

## Photographer

Fraser's own photographic work has focused overwhelmingly on black and white [infrared](/source/Infrared_photography) landscape photographs of [Scotland](/source/Scotland), ranging from traditional landscapes, to ancient [Pictish](/source/Pictish_art) ruins and [medieval castles](/source/Medieval_castle) and fortresses.[2][41][42][43][44] The photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the US and [Latin America](/source/Latin_America), and awarded multiple prizes.[45]
